It's pretty safe to say that the PC RPG market was taking it in the rear from Console RPG's for a while there. There was an abundance of RPG's for the PC you could find, but a lot of them weren't really that good. The very nice people at Black Isle Studio's and Interplay realized this, and prayed unto Lathander, the Morning God, who shone down unto the good people of Earth a blessed item: this game. Right from the start you are thrust into action. As you wander around your home of Candlekeep, doing various tasks and chores for people, you run into assassins and thugs who have one thing on their mind... taking your head. The game offers a wide variety of character races and classes to play, just like the one and only pen & paper version of D&D. Many of the locales you visit are familiar to lovers of the Forgotten Realms, and you even meet some famous faces, such as Elminster and Drizzt Do'Urden. The plot is very intricate and the game is huge (Spanning 4 cd's), which does lead to some CD-Swapping, but it's totally worth it. The environments are richly detailed, and the various NPC's that can join your party are amazing (especially Minsc, and his Miniature Giant Space Hamster). The side quests you can perform are pretty intriguing, but there are a lot of Fed-Ex type quests, too much for my liking. Go here, get this, bring it to me, I'll pay you money and give you experience, yada yada yada. This leads to a lot of travel between areas, and in order to reach some places, you have to travel all the way across 4 or 5 map screens, which can be a real pain. At least once you go to a place, you can immediately travel there again from anywhere, and the only thing you have to worry about is Random Encounters.
This game brought the sorely needed fire back into computer based RPG's, and it couldn't have happened at a better time. The game won many awards, and garnered high praise from many reputable PC gaming magazines, and it deserved all of it. It's definately worth going out and getting a copy to play for yourself.
