Thanks. I have to admit, Baldur's Gate was a tough game to review because of its depth. Just nailing the play mechanics in this review was fairly difficult for me. As for the storyline, there isn't much to say about it because it's actually fairly rudimentary (Gorion throws you out of Candlekeep to see the outside world, Gorion gets killed, Imoen feels your sorrow and joins you, etc). And the character I created doesn't exactly fit such a storyline (he's too "tough-guy"-esque).

By the way, I'm thinking of also buying either Icewind Dale or Planescape Torment sometime. Are those games good?

Nice review. I do wish you spent some time talking about the story (unfortunately, not one of BG's strongest assets).

Unlike console RPGs, with PC RPGS, you really have to take advantage of the ability to save anywhere, anytime (except combat). You can just use the quick save (useful after you escape a battle by the skin of your neck), but you are better off getting into the habit of manually saving frequently. Cautious approaches (taking small steps, having your thief search for traps in dungeons) work better than mad rushes and also helps to limit the number of enemies who spot you and attack. It is definitely a slower pace compared to games like FFX.

Battles in BG also seem to be more difficult because the random number generator (for "dice rolls") tends to go against you. I don't know if this was intentional or just a strange programming fluke, but at least if affects you and the computer equally. But when you are outnumbered and in a bad tactical position, that doesn't amount to much. :)
