You may remember feeding quarter after quarter to an 8' monster in arcades, pizzarias and boardwalks world-wide back in the 80s. It's name was CENTIPEDE, and it was one of the biggest arcade classics of all time, sharing ranks with such games as PAC-MAN and GALAGA. It's been a classic for years, and it's finally gotten revamped for the 90s.
The game comes with two "modes", really two different versions of the game - "classic mode" which is a 3-D, 256 color high-resolution version of the original game with new sound effects but with the same great characters and backgrounds.
The other is "adventure" mode, which lets you play the game with either an overview of the action, a view from inside "the shooter" (the ship that you travel in), or a first-person view from the ground level. In adventure mode, you travel through the different areas and worlds of the little people, saving them and their homes from being destroyed by the giant bugs. Adventure mode reminds me of a Doom/Legend of Zelda type game based on which view you choose.
The game's graphics are great on most computers, however since it is only 256 colors and is ACTIVE-X controlled, you'll notice when running it on computers running at 32-bit colors the graphics "break up" or get lines/static on the screen. Also, running your monitor at a different resolution (800 x 600 is standard now) than the game can handle (only the old VGA resolutions are supported) can cause the same thing. The controls are a bit buggy, too (no pun intended). This all stems from having the entire game run as an ACTIVE-X script.
Overall it's a great game, but don't expect much of a game out of it. Based on the problems it has, it's great aspects are overshadowed. The 3-D arcade mode is free of the problems of the adventure mode (it's less graphic-intense), but since you paid for a game with both versions on it, I think HASBRO INTERACTIVE should find a better way to code the game.
One thing the instruction manual doesn't tell you: when installing the game, if you select "Install minimum" as it suggests, you don't get background music since the backing music is all CD AUDIO tracks on the disc. If you select "Install full", you get the CD audio music since the game isn't run off the disc but from the hard drive. A good tip for any other people out there who have it.
