Opinion Summary
I've logged more hours playing this game than any other.

Pros: Still fun after hundreds of hours. Challenges the mind, not the reflexes. Endless replay value.
Cons: 'Just one more turn' feeling will rob you of all your free time.

Civ II is basically my favorite game of all time as well. I guess I am not surprised.

Yes, don't be fooled by Call to Power or Alpha centauri. Neither were very good. But Civ III by the Sid Meier, is finally in the works, (though they have been saying this for years) it should come out this year.

Civ II is the only game I play that never gets old. And its insights into history are great. One of the best ways for understanding history, I sadly use it often as a model to understand the real world.

"So the US switched to Fundamentalism during WWII which is why it was able to pump out units and money like crazy while keeping everyone happy"

Or many many others which I will probably write up in a review of my own someday, from the effect of varioius wonders like the UN or SETI, to the differences between various governments (I like Communism), to the connection between various sciences, like how Democracy is required for Conscription. Great stuff.

Don't even put Alpha Centauri and Civ: Call to Power in the same category! I think Alpha was a far better game than CTP, and even made some big improvements over Civ 2. Still, Alpha just didn't have as good of a feel to me as Civ 2, even with the zones of control, government specifics, and technologies that made some terrain types more helpful as the game played along.
