Normally, I am not really into flight simulations. The other night, I was at a friends place, participation in a LAN session. Everyone was playing this new game, Crimson Skies. I thought "why not, it looks nice I will give it a go". As soon as I took the helm of my plane, I was hooked for hours.
When I say Crimson Skies looks nice, that is an understatement!!! Graphically, it is unmatched. I have never seen smoother, cleaner graphics than Crimson Skies, and the fact that it is a flight sim makes it even more impressive. The controls and movement are as realistic as you could imagine. If you try and do unbelievable things while flying, you will inevitably end up smeared all over the landscape! The banking and rolling is crisp, with no noticable hitches.
The game itself is quite complex, making a change from generic flight sims. The scenario is early 1900's, with a variety of aircrafts, even choppers (although the planes themselves are a little unrealistic). You are suppost to be pirates of sorts, but I think that this game is much better suited for multiplayer, rather than the solo game.
Getting started on Crimson Skies, you can choose from around 15 planes, and each one has different speed, armour, and firepower. Next you choose what types of armoury you will fit on your plane (I really LOVE the choices you get for weapons, it is a fantastic variety, and really fun to try). You can play straight dogfight or you can team up and play get the flag. Bases are huge hangers with double open ends, and you fly your plane through to get the flag (there was alot of scrap metal lying around the bases after I had tried to pass through....I always crashed!!). Getting the flag, kills and dying all reflect on the amount of points you get. This is a great idea, and it allows you to re-enter the game after you die.
The shooting is inpeccable. Initially, it is nigh on impossible to hit the others, but you slowly get the hang of it. At the end of the games, you are flooded with a variety of statistics, how many kills, deaths, even hit percentage! The variety of sounds you get from guns, engines, crashing and shooting are fantastic. A real audio treat!
Crimson Skies is by far the best flight sim I have encountered, and has made me think twice about other flight simulators. Definatly play this game with 3D graphics though. Anything else would be a crime.
