After reading some good things about this game, and craving some good air combat, I picked up this game. At $29.99 it seemed like a reasonable price. And then I got the package in the mail.
I've tried to boot this game 10 times, and 10 straight times, no matter what options I set the game to...
Crash.
That's it.
$29.99 for an install of a program that won't work.
In case you're wondering, no I've never played the game, but I figure if anything merited a epinion to help a buyer make a more informed decision, this would be it.
I figure it's probably my video card, because Elsa's a bunch of rude bastards who don't update their drivers very often, and when they do, they suck. So I get the latest drivers, which were released on the 6th of this month...impressive.
They don't do jack.
So I try to use Microsoft's support. I go to their website for the game which gives me the helpful information:
"Crimson Skies will be on sale Summer 2000!"
I go to the support URL listed in the manual. Not only has the address for the support page changed, but it doesn't list the game as one of the supported products.
So, the manual tells me I can call...no charge! Except for the fact that the free line isn't toll free...it's long distance...to Seattle, and there is no f*ing way I'm going to pay money to ask Microsft why THEIR product doesn't work on THEIR operating system with THEIR joystick. This stuff should work, right out of the box. NO EXCEPTIONS!
So I decide to do this the excruciatingly slow way...email a customer support rep and get a form letter back. I try to email them, but wait, after I've already agreed to 5 different sets of license agreements, I have to enter my 20 digit serial number...which is hidden somewhere in the Main Menu of the game...the SAME MAIN MENU I'VE NEVER EVEN SEEN!
I can't go on without putting in the support code, all I get is an agry red page that suggests I go look for the serial number some more.
So this is the 3rd Microsoft game I've bought this year, and never ever got to run on my system, a system which is under a year old. An AMD 700, with 256MB of RAM, a 16GB HD, a 12 Speed Burner, and a 6X DVD-ROM drive, which can't run any Microsoft games. I'm up a creek without a paddle, and without a boat. Hell, and there are a bunch of sharp pointy rocks below me, and let's just make the creek a big ol' waterfall.
I vow from this moment on to never buy another Microsoft product. If you see a review of mine on another Microsoft product, it's because I took the price of that product out of what they owed me for falsely advertising their products as "products". I produce several large samples of human waste, and I don't consider that a product, and neither should Microsoft.
