I First saw this game in an add a few weeks before it came out in a magazine, and it looked interesting, so I kept my eye on it. As soon as it was out, i went out to my local EBX and picked up a copy for $40.00. and let me tell you, its one of the best $40.00 i've ever spent!
This game is a masterpiece! Good graphics, good plot, awesome planes! i'll tell you the low-down:
Story:
This game is set in 1937, an alternative 1937. the United States has fragmented into multiple Nations. some of the nations are allied, making trucks and trains obselete for commerce (due to the fact that they cannot send them though enemy territory). so the world has turned to Zepplins (blimps)to transport goods. but with this, comes "air pirates" which are bassically "pirates", that simply hi-jack the zepplins for loot and cargo.
Militias have turned to using zepplins as airborne battleships that are capable of launching aircraft. you are Nathan Zachary, leader of the pirate gang: The Fortune Hunters.
Gameplay:
This would fall into the "arcade flight sim" catagory. yes, it is a flight sim, but then again its not.... You do fly planes around, dogfight enemy aircraft, Strafe ground targets, and pull airial stunts, but the physics engine is not strict or limiting like Janes WW2 Fighters, and Microsofts Flight Simulator. there is no flaps, landing gear, gun jams, or anythnig else of this sort. this sounds to some people like it would be boring, simply flying around, with no worries. I thought that at first too, but realistic physics would not work here, due to some REALLY tight spaces that you can fly though, such as train tunnels, and other claustraphobic spaces. also, when your playing the game, you wont even seem to notice the diffrence. also, you are not instantly dead if you hit an object: (just as long as its not head on)you can colide with objects and instead of death, you simply lose some armor on the part that hit the ground, or whatever you just hit. the Single player levels are great too! they involve all sorts of wierd tasks, that are really varied level to level. almost anything is destructible also, such as if your in hollywood, and you hate that annoying sign that they always brag about: BLOW IT UP!!! fire your rockets, and watch the misserable thing collapse! MWA HA HA!!!
Graphics:
Awesome! Explotions spit out burning metal that leaves smoke behind it, you can see the shadow of your window frames on your cockpit and on your wings, and the ground has a really high level of detail. such as in one of the levels: you can see cars driving around on the streets, and there is even a police pursuit that you can see and hear! Destroyed zepplins do the Hinderburg burn, and Plane models are really nice too!
Sound:
Lets just say that its really really good...
Control:
No learning curve here! you can customise all the controls to your liking, and their arent that many to remember. Theres even an in flight help menu that displays your customised controls!
Requirements:
Now all this will take some Hefty system requirements, as they say. it really depends an whether your system "likes" it or not. I sopposedly have a "low class" computer, yet it runs Crimson Skies (and every other game) at 60fps with all the detail up, but ive heard of Pentium III 800s running this game choppy, so i cant really say what kind of system you need. to clear thnigs up a bit: it needs 64 MB of RAM to run, and 96 to run multiplayer Read: IN WINDOWS 2000 only! 95\98 only need 64 for multiplayer. there are two installations: min - 650 MB max - 800 MB
and it also needs a 250 MB windows swap file. (free disk space)
Bugs:
Okay, now for the bad part: I HIGHLY reccomend that you update the game befroe playing to at least ver 1.01 or saved game data will be deleted every time you customise a plane. The game menu loads the information as you play the game, resulting in a little bit of a pause for every button pushed. Loading times to aculy get into the level are very long, becasue the game has to render EVERYTHING in the game world with exact presicion so you can fly very close to certain objects.
Overall:
This is a great game, i would reccomend it to everyone who has a computer, in fact, go get it now! if your a flight simulator fan, then you'll most definetly like this! it will be better for you if you have a little patience. of you dont, then bring your gameboy or somethnig while it loads.
