Doom II is an antique game by computer standards; it was released all the way back in the Autumn of 1994. However, it's still a great game, not only because it looks good, but because the people who designed it understood how a great game should work.
Sure, it's a very violent and bloody game, with a first person point of view. The plot is simple and gory; you one of a group of space marines trying to defeat a group on interdimensional creatures that have gotten first to Mars, then to Earth, to wreak havoc and to destroy the human race. Also, there's a lot of satanic and cultist imagery in the game; pentagrams, skulls, alters and demons abound.
Still, the game has a very fluid, almost movie-like motion, and the animation is very realistic. The various monstrous opponents move realistically, and they have some degree of (programmed) intelligence, so they can do things like cooperate with each other, sneak up on you, and dodge your fire. In fact, the U.S. Marines even use a version of Doom to train their soldiers for patrol manuevers.
I especially like the assortment of weapons you get, including a bazooka, double-barreled shotgun and a chain gun. The weapons work correctly, including taking time to "cycle up" or load, for each discharge.
Playing the game on its higher difficulty settings is very challenging, and you will find it takes real work to get through each level to the next one. If anything, you'll find your reaction time improves, and, like playing chess, you'll start thinking ahead and developing strategies on the fly.
Some of the more interesting things you can do for variety are to use some of the cheat codes (posted on the Web), like the one which lets you walk through walls. You can then sneak up on monsters by walking through walls behind them.
Could I make a criticism or two? Only that the game's graphics are starting to show their age; recent versions of Quake have better looking (though not necessarily better playing) graphics. The sound track is also a bit simplistic; there's not much of a sophisticated musical score.
All in all, Doom II is a great game, and it even comes on floppy disc!! Like the old Alka-Seltzer commercial went, "try it, you like it!"
