stillwaddup's Full Review: Freespace 2 for Windows
Volition dam well knew it was a bad idea to mess with a good thing. In fact, it was beyong good, it was sacred. Descent: Freespace was such a kick a$$ game that when I was done with it, I just kind of sulked back into and heaved a sigh that indicated both "Man what a ride!" and "Sh*T! I'm done with it! Now what?" I was angry, but a then a thought popped up. "Hey! They can make a sequel!" And ya know what? They did, and it too, kicked some serious a$$.
This game plays EXACTLY like the original. Absolutely nothing was changed in the controls from #1 to #2. The targeting, ship and weapon pools, flying, it's all there. Those who played the original Freespace will have no trouble hopping onto your comfy chair and getting right to the action.
However, one thing that REALLY got changed, I mean REALLY REALLY intensifyed, was the graphics. After playing the Freespace 2 demo, I was just kind of "WHOA!" You know those cartoons where speakers go really loud and everyone get's blown around like they are being sucked out of a plane? That's what it felt like. I just started playing and I was having a huge joygasm. I swear to god, I must've been playing the regular 2 level demo for about an hour because I just LOVED that game. The graphics chuck Descent 3's and throw it off the course. The explosions are phenominal, the weapons are magnificant too. They glow and the light is amazing, the missle trails, oh it rocks! Another thing that really looks cool is the backrounds. The nebulas look awesome, and there are planets to fight by. The shockwaves from bombs and exploding ships are my favorite visual and I like getting really up close to them, even if it does mean my ship getting ripped to shreds.
Ah yes, what the game is all about, the action. I...I can't really describe it. It just feals like you are IN THE GAME, fighting with your allied piolets, and guns ablazing. Oh, there will be lots of lasers and missles and flak guns and (REALLY kick a$$) beam cannons. The dogfighting is super-intense as the Shivan you are chasing tries to loose you behind an asteroid or you sweep across a humongous capital ship, shooting non-stop, until KABOOM! and you give yourself a pat on the back.
I must also give kudos to whoever wrote the game. The next and literiture is great as you listen to a briefing, or hear to piolets argue, or hear a fellow piolet scream in terror as he/she's shot down by a ship. This game is fun to listen to as well to play.
Multi-player is pretty good. I can't say it's great, 'cause it isn't. You expect lots of dogfighting and shooting and stuff like that, but with no where to hide or anything, there is really no strategy. Usually you will have team on team missions, where one team is trying to complete an objective and the other repels it. There's co-op for human against A.I. havok, but that's really all the fun.
If there is one game to get at all, it's this. Even people who aren't quite fans of the genre should give it a shot, and I'm sure they'll fall in love with it too. Now I'm gonna go right nasty comments to people who gave this game a bad review.
