I originally didn't think much of this game when I first bought it. I never played the first Decent: Freespace game, so I had no idea what I was really getting into with this one. I got it mainly because a few friends of mine got the game and according to them it was lots of fun multiplayer. I figured, what the heck.
It has been hands down the best $45 dollars I have spent on personal software. No joke.
I got the game out of the box (all 3 CDs), and began the install. This is probably the only real downside of the whole thing. The full install is well over 1 gig of hard drive space (I had 27+ gigs, so who cares?). The full install also takes some time. That aside the setup was a breeze. The game pretty much does all of the hard work for you in terms of settings for video and sound.
Fired the game up… very nice intro, leads into the main screen where you run the game from there. The campaign starts off well, and gives you a few through training missions for the otherwise complex controls and screen (if you do not do these training missions you will get lost). I first used a cheap Gravis controller for the game. It worked alright, the movements were jerky, but it suited me fine.
After about an hour getting the major details down I started the regular campaign and I was instantly hooked. The first day I got the game I must have played it for a good 5 or 6 hours straight. The missions get more challenging as you advance (duh). The further you advance the better weapons / tech you get and at the same time more responsibility as a pilot. The story line is fantastic.
Once you defeat the campaign (btw, you can play it on 5 difficulty levels) it's not over. The multiplayer on pxo.net is very good. You have a point and ladder system there that ranks you among other human pilots.
I literally played this game day in day out for at least two or three months. And I still play a lot now, but life is getting in the way more now.
If you are a fan of sci-fi or just plain like flight simulations, then this is a 110% must have game. Like I said it's the best 45$ I spent for software, period.
