mauldinl's Full Review: Imperium Galactica 2: Alliances for Windows
Imperium Galactica II is a really fun real-time strategy game sort of following the tradition of Master of Orion series.
First of all, the graphics are absolutely gorgeous! The images are crisp and clear, and the animation is smooth.
Also, the music score is awesome! It has a really great peaceful quality that I haven't heard in a game before.
You can choose one of three races to control - each with its own strengths, weaknesses, and goals. This definitely helps its replay value. More races would have been nice, but I can't complain too much. Even with 3 main races, the game is really fun.
The difficulty levels are fairly skewed. Easy is extremely easy, Normal is very hard, and I don't tend to last long on the Hard setting.
Like many games of this type, Imperium Galactica II has a tech tree that allows you to get better ships, weapons, tanks, buildings, etc. It isn't as huge as some games, but it seems to work fairly well in the game. One of the more interesting catches in this game is that you must have enough research buildings in place before you can even think of researching certain items.
Combat is also impressive. If your fleet is large enough, you can select a formation for the fleet to begin combat in. After combat is underway, you can select individual ships - or groups of ships to move or attack a particular ship. Normally, I prefer turned based combat instead of real-time combat, but Imperium Galactica II does a very good job with its real-time engine. Also, I really like the fact that you can slow down, speed up, or even pause combat or normal empire building.
Planets can be issued commands to focus on certain areas to auto build on (tank building, ship building, technology, etc). This is a great feature that takes away from a lot of the micro-management details. However, if you like to micro-manage everything, you can disable this feature and design the city yourself.
While it isn't in the same league as the Master of Orion series, Imperium Galactica II just about starts a new league to play in. It will be interesting to see how MOO3 compares to Imperium Galactica II when it is released in a couple of years.
