First off, Interstate 76 is a great game. The concept is cool, and the execution is great. The goal of the game is to defeating an evil lord by shooting and destroying his cars and his friend's cars, all this while driving around in your well equipped destruction machine. There are numerous missions in the game, and each one gets you closer and closer to the goal of defeating the boss. I-76 also has a Melee mode, in which you pick you car, outfit it, and go head-to-head against one or multiple enemies. This Melee event can occur on any one of many landscapes, and all these are closed circuit areas (ie you can't win without battling your foes). In the full mission mode, you only get to pick one car, but you continue to upgrade its bits as the game progresses. The storyline of the missions are presented via cool videos and conversations with your compadre, a guy named Taurus.
Graphics- While they're not ground breaking, the game is reasonably polished, and is very fast on even a slow computer. A 3D card would make things that much better, but the game runs extremely well on most computers. The detail level, the horizon, the texture of the ground are all adjustable to your preference. The sensation of speed is quite accurately depicted, and while the cars handle much better than they would in real life, they handle much more realistically than cars in the need for speed series. The mission mode really provides the game to show its stuff. The melee mission has mostly bland looking areas, as the game tries to allocate more of its resources to the actual action of the many cars instead of taking up precious resources with a fancy landscape.
Controls- There are a LOT of controls in this game, and thus it is probably best played on a keyboard. It isn't too clumsy to play it this way, so using the keyboard is fine. While the cars themselves are reasonably easily controlled, there are many other functions like changing weapons, picking a target, looking at maps etc that are all handled by various keys on the keyboard. All these other controls take a while to learn, but once you've played the game for about a week or two, you'll become a pro at it.
Sound- There is a lot of 'groovy' music throughout the game, and it's all mostly 70s sounding, and its usually quite pleasing to hear. The car's sound effects are nicely done, and the weapons sound really good. In a mission game, there is a not of stuff going on, and the game is able to keep everything moving fast, and this adds to the overall feel of the game.
Overall- This game has great gameplay. Unless you hate shooting or driving games, you'll enjoy this game immensely. The game is combination of a racing and shoot-em-up game, so don't expect a great racing game or a great pure shooter type game. It is very successful at mixing the two genres together for a cool concept. Many other games have done this before, but none has as deep a story line, with so much to do in order to reach those goals. Using maps, radar etc makes things extremely challenging, which can produce good replay value, but can also frustrate players. This is a tough game and will take a good amount of time to master. I'm really glad that this was released for the PC and not the Playstation because renting it for a couple of days would not have done this game justice. Being able to play a demo for a long time helped me decide that this game was worth it. If you're looking for a challenging, well-made game with a great storyline, I-76 won't disappoint.
