JadeMurphy's Full Review: Might and Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer for Window...
Wow! Might and Magic VIII is great! I'm a big fan of this series anyway, but I was greatly impressed with this installment of the games.
You are on Jadame and you have to save the world. Things that are different about this game over others in the same series line is that you can play Vampires, Liches, Minotaurs, and Dark Elves. There is even a DRAGON that joins your party! You've never seen the likes of the firepower that a group can have with a dragon, lich, 2 vampires and a cleric!
The biggest problem I have with this game is the same one I have with ALL RPG computer games. SWITCHES and BUTTONS. Why do programmers feel the need to throw them in? It's a dumb plot concept.
"Look, Ugh the Orcslayer. What thinkst thou of this button that is so strategically placed in the middle of the wall for no other purposeth?"
DUMB. I hate wandering around an empty dungeon, looking for nearly invisible buttons and switches that I might've missed in the heat of battle just so I can finally get out of this stage and back to kicking virtual butt.
Other minor complaints have to do with the changing of the magic system. I hate this stupid "Expert, Master, Grand Master" junk. It was nice to have it as a fun side thing in the other games, but now that it's become nearly impossible for anyone to cast the highest level spells without being almost finished with the game, I HATE it. I mean, I want to cast ENCHANT ITEM before I'm too old to use the thing I enchanted!
I am thankful, also, for the Oracle who keeps me in line with my quests. I love the side quests, but this game has WAY too many and some are just plain idiotic. I really don't think my 20th level Vampire needs to be cruising around in the Cathedral of EEP looking for a wheel of dunduck cheese for some goober in another town who's too weak to go get it himself! And you can't gain enough experience anymore from whooping butt alone. Without the side quests, you won't gain experience enough to gain levels.
Oh, and there's another thing. You only get to pick one of your 5 characters at the beginning. The rest, you have to acquire like lice as you go through the game. Some of the possible NPC's are really cool, but they're just plain jerks. "You are NOT of my status, underling...." If it were a "real" game, I would've given that jerk a piece of my sword!
But, the fact that you get dragons, vampires, liches, and other goodies can make up for all of this game's shortcomings (which really are few).
The graphics and the interface are fairly simple to understand and the game is highly addictive. Lots of fun.
Very good game and a great addition to this wonderful series overall. Only buy it if you have a lot of time on your hands! This game is LONG.
