I am a fan of the strategy/RPG hybrid type of game that Odium is. Generally that genre stays on console systems, but I must say that Odium does it well. There are a few problems however.
When I first got into the game I was appalled by the combat system. I like the typical hex or square turn based combat system, but Odium uses very strange rules for weapons. It's almost not like a fight, but a chess match. Weapons can only fire along specific pathways and not just within a certain range. For example if you are using a gun that can only fire in a straight line and an enemy is right in front of you but at an angle, you cannot shoot him! I really did not like this at first, but I tolerated it because I did enjoy the rest of the game.
The graphics were acceptable. Nothing spectacular but nothing terrible. The story itself was interesting. I found myself enjoying the story more and more as it went on. The game is also not easy. Since ANY of your characters dying ends the game, you will spend a lot of time reloading missions. Ammo and weapons are also often extremely limited, forcing you to carefully monitor your supplies (Note I consider this a good thing, but I can see how it would irritate some people). The character development worked well. You gain skill levels in each type of weapon and also regular character levels with a bit of point distribution when you level. I really was starting to enjoy this game.
Then...*poof* The game is over. I win. I sat there in disbelief as I watched the ending sequence. Then the credits began to roll. I could not believe the game had ended so soon. I had thought the main plot was just beginning and now the game was over! Only when the credits ended and I was put back at the title screen did I realize that the game was truly over.
My biggest complaint of all is that this game is a tease. Just when things start to get interesting, it is over. Many loose ends remain. Plot points remain unexplored. The main plot seems unfinished.
So in conclusion, if you can get past the odd rules for guns in combat and you like this genre of game, you will like Odium. Just be prepared for a pleasurable, but very short ride.
