| duckyone's Full Review: Snood for Macintosh |
I first heard about the game Snood at my college. My roommate and some of my friends would go to the computer in my dorm's lounge so they could play the game. I didn't see the big fascination, so I never played the game.
Then, my mom got a brand new computer a few weeks ago, and one of my sisters put the game Snood on it right after the computer arrived. She played it a lot, and since I happened to come home for a few days (between school and work), so I decided to give the game a shot.
At first glance, it seemed like an easy game. All of these bright, colorful blocks with faces on them were waiting to be matched up with the same color so they could disappear. It is a game similar to Tetris or Dr. Mario (a Nintendo game). Get at least 3 blocks of the same color together, and they disappear. Get all the blocks to disappear, and you win. You aim a little launcher to shoot the pieces where you want them to go, so you have to have good aim!
But then you add the "Danger Meter." After every block, the meter goes up a little. When it gets to the top, the pieces all move down the screen. If they move too far down, you lose. Also, there are skull blocks, which have no matches, but can only be knocked down by getting all of the surrounding pieces knocked down. They can get in the way of the pieces that you are trying to hit, making the game more difficult.
This game is easy to learn, but very hard to master. It can also be VERY addicting. My sister and friends can't get enough of the game. I think my mom is also getting addicted to the game. There are even Snood tournaments on the Internet! This game has been well known for addicting people.
Any downside to Snood? Yes. This shareware (free) game, is there to play all you want, but after you play 100 games, little poem messages pop up during every game, telling you to pay $14.95 to register. The poems are really bad (and they tell you to register or you the poems will get worse!) and they try to make you feel guilty. They tell you the game's creator's children will go hungry if you don't register. (Try not to feel too guilty. Usually that particular poem make me laugh!)
If you do not register, you can't get "cheat options" (to help you play the game easier) or play in Snood tournaments. Also, if you don't register, you can't design your own Snood puzzles to play. But that really doesn't bother me because I don't play it that often anyway. I put it on my computer when I got back to school, but I hardly ever play it. I have a lot more games to go before those annoying poems start to bother me.
I do recommend this game for all ages, because it is easy to learn and fun to play. And, if you can handle the poems, I wouldn't register, because the benefits aren't all that interesting in the game. But if you like tournaments (and are, in essence, a Snood addict), I would register it.
