jonathanwade's Full Review: Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Fallen for Windows
Star Trek Deep Space 9: The Fallen is a rather interesting Star Trek game built upon the Unreal engine. The play is, for the most part smooth, and engaging, with realistic lighting, weapons sound, and a subtle and authentic soundtrack.
The story is interesting and compelling. (I won't spoil it but the Pah Wraiths, the Cardassians, the Dominion and some new enemies are up to no good.)
The cinemagraphics of the cut scenes are, for the most part, excellent (with the exception of Worf's overly purple facial coloring in close shots).
The layout of the game is, like the series, episodic, and, as such, is highly enjoyable to fans of the series.
One of the most interesting things about the game is that you can play it from Worf, Kira, or Sisco's perspective and each of the characters play a different part in each episode. This is a rather delightful bonus that makes the game all the more interesting because of its replayability.
The only real problems I had with the game were:
1) It didn't like my Intel740 based video card. I realize that for maxi-gamers this won't be an issue because it is a dated chipset, but for people like me who live lives with yesterday's tech, it was annoying. I had to go to the website and find the fix, which required me to manually change a setting in the config file -- No problem for me, but a bit beyond the capabilities of many casual gamers.
2) It seemed a bit buggy. It crashed on me several times.
3) Some of the puzzles and landscapes were almost impossible to figure out, not because they were that complex, but because they were so carefully hidden. I'd suggest careful searching (thankfully, there doesn't seem to be a time limit).
If you aren't a super quick gamer you might also check out some of the cheat codes. I had to resort to the noclipping mode more than once because of the lack of a map feature.
4) Actually, there may be a map feature, but with no real help system in place, I was left to stumble around trying to find out which keys served which functions. That's not a fun guessing game, but once you've figured it out, the game is a pleasure to play.
Finally, you might check out freesoftwarepromotions.com, I got my copy of the Fallen for the price of postage and handling ($4.95, I believe) from them. It is definitely worth the price I paid for it.
