denatron's Full Review: The Longest Journey: Adventure Game of the Year Ed...
The Longest Journey:
I'm not one to buy that many video games (it's an addiction) but once in a while, I'll read the reviews on them and get an idea of what goes on during these sort of adventures that can last sometimes for hours or days and even months. That is depending on my schedule of work and routines we face each day as human beings of course.
The Longest Journey has been one video game that caught my eye. This one has done well commercially.
The introduction begins with strange dreams the main character April Ryan experiences and in time becomes part of her conscious life. April sees this in the beginning. The entire town eventually becomes part of the surfacing phenomenon, thus beginning the main part of The Longest Journey. This game has an intriguing plot. Some dialogue and character development comes about in this game.
The plot begins a few hundred years into the future. April Ryan, a college student and your average teenager? Campus friends (some close and trusted friends), a cafe job and a boss that doesn't like paydays. Her minimum living expenses such as small room to rent, transit passes etc. Her first experiences in Newport (Somewhere in North America) in a neighborhood called Venice. A diary of before Campus life, during and where she wants to succeed. The diary will increase and help with conversations she has had with her colleagues, her personal thoughts and adventures. Included is also a separate conversation log to reference the Journey from each character. There is something we can relate to one time or another in this story. April is also a shifter of twin worlds of science and magic. That's when everything changes when she finds this out. There are no guns to shoot, no explosives to set off but there are monsters. There are many puzzles that need completion or one will have to retract and start over at an earlier part of the game. Paying close attention of where April has been helps. There is reading to reference these two worlds of Stark and Arcadia.
Though there hasn't been a lot of action in this game but there is mystery and suspense. There are a lot of educational points like denial events surrounding April in the beginning introduction of her gifts and talents or learning curves. There is also a warranted sense of humor that comes to mind with many of the characters. Some characters do remind me of actual people I have known in my lifetime. There is also profound language, drunks, landlords being different of the boarding house etc. Many of the characters are different actually. It's almost as real as it gets and even then there is the after feeling of just read a book or watching a movie. You can save the game and continue at anytime. This will help if you missed anything and have to go back. Audio/Visual can be simple to remember from the few games I have played. This is actually my third game I have purchased for home personal computers.
There are excellent textures and backgrounds along with the features in this game. The game looks and sounds exceptional. The sound converses with the graphical and the music is cool. Instrumental does help for the mood for this particular game. Overall I would consider giving this game a go for entertainment expense account. If you're into a Long Journey, then this video is the one.
