_Targeted's Full Review: The Longest Journey: Adventure Game of the Year Ed...
I ordered this game directly from Great Britain, and it took a while for the box to be delivered. Nevertheless, it was worth waiting.
The game goes in 4 CD and a small b/w manual.
Installation is somewhat funny, it installs exactly 25% total progress off each disk. Takes about 1G for full install. Still requires disks though.
I had a problem starting the game first time, the created shortcut did not run the game, but showed a "This is not a Win32 application" popup and that's all. I had to create another shortcut pointing to "game.exe" rather than to "launcher.exe" (default). Note that this is most probably a Windows 2000 problem only. "game.exe" started ok.
Other than that - the game is great.
You play for April Ryan, an artist-to-be in a huge industrial city of Newport AKA Venice. And I just love that girl :) the way she talks, her jokes and notices are absolutely funny, and very delicate.
There is a guy, that's right, who lives next door - you can't hear him talking without "[censored]", "[censored]" and "[censored]", but apparently April does not like him and so do I.
What would you think about a bird who can talk ? But there is another question - what does the bird think about you :) And it will speak it out loud :)
You will have to deal with all kind of characters - from dumb and lazy, to knowledgeable and smart, and the way April goes through the game, it's just amazing. Just watch her sleeping over an old sailor's story... Trying to greet a captain with "Hayo !" and finding out that the sailor speaks like everybody else. A little confusing. :)
Two worlds to explore... What else can I say.
The three strongest points of this game - the spirit, the sound and the sparkling and delicate humor. I mean - THE SPIRIT, THE SOUND and THE SPARKLING AND DELICATE HUMOR.
The graphics is pretty good, character animation is little static, but looks good. The backgrounds are drawn well, and I just love the cutscenes.
The puzzles are not so difficult, but the game is 4 CD and you don't want it to become "The Longest Journey", do you ? ;) The game finds a good balance so it's still interesting to follow, with no need of scanning every pixel for "that [censored] object".
It's definitely one of the best adventure games I ever seen.
