Can stepping on a piece of steel get you killed? In this game it can.
In first person, you play a master thief, where you go from place to place, stealing anything you get your hands on as well as satisfy your benefactor. The challenge lies in the ability to sneak around without getting caught. You can step on the wrong material, walk too fast or just be too in the light so that people can see you. After all, nobody wants a stranger in their house. Especially if you own a mansion with illicit valuable goods.
That is what gives the game a unique quality about it. There is nothing wrong with first person shooters, but after awhile, don't you want something different? This game supplies that alternate challenge. It will certainly get your heart racing when you know you aren't shielded, you don't have multiple medi-packs and you can die with just a few blows.
The nice thing about this game is that, even though it has a unique concept going for it, it doesn't give up on the story. You start off with a chip on your shoulder and a measly heist, but that heist leads to something. Each new heist builds a greater plot line with more intrigue. The atmosphere around you, whether it's a dark castle or a prison or whatever, even has a good feel. The twists and turns lead to a very engrossing story.
One feature of the game is that it nicely lists out your objective. However, this is not a rigid formula. In fact, the plot might insist that you even destroy the old agenda and come up with new ones.
The sounds and graphics are a mixed bag. The sounds are excellent. Being able to hear and distinguish sounds is an integral part of the game. The graphics are another story. If you like believing that your forearm is a trapezoid with a crappy texture map, this game is for you. Otherwise, you will probably find it a bit lacking. In most all of my PC playing, I think this is the first time that the sound and graphics didn't roughly match.
Nonetheless, the graphics are the only truly bad aspect to this game. Now, I see second and third generations of it in the stores. This is a good thing.
