In an genre dominated by mindless, bloody, games like Quake, Half-Life and others, Thief: The Dark Project, is a refreshing change from the normal First Person Shooter. Because of it's emphasis on stealth and cunning, rather than brute force and violence, perhaps a more accurate description of this game's genre would be First Person Sneaker.
Your role in Thief: The Dark Project, is that of Garrett, a master thief, roaming a world balanced between the forces of good and evil, and an unwitting pawn in tipping that balance. you progress through the game in a series of linear "missions" some by choice, but mostly not, with a set of goals to achieve to be successful. Although the missions progress in order, one after another, the great strength of the game is that the actions you take within each mission are almost completely up to you. You can freely wander through mansions, caves, prisons and even whole cities as you work to achieve your goals. It is this non-linear game play that really sets Thief apart from other games.
To be successful in this game requires more than the brute-force, hack-and-slash methods of other games. You play a thief and you must act like one, sticking to the shadows, attacking from behind and generally not being noticed. This doesn't mean that the more violently inclined should stay away. There are plenty of opportunities to let your aggressions out on a hapless guard or walking corpse, just watch your back.
Although, the graphics are far from spectacular, the games music and sounds are superb, and the atmosphere is incredible. At times, while playing this game, I have literally been scared out of my seat. There is nothing like hearing a sound behind you and turning around to face a zombie overtaking you! The game has a unique way of making you apart of it, by forcing you to listen to sounds, and paying attention to the world around you.
In short, if you are sick of the worn-out, cookie-cutter, First Person Shooters that seem to be dominating the industry, check out Thief: The Dark Project. It is refreshing in it's uniqueness and will keep you coming back to explore just beyond the next shadow.
