Pros:Impressive graphics, exciting missions to play.
Cons:Many bugs in multiplayer Internet mode
The Bottom Line: Get this game, even if you aren't a Star Trek fan, you might still enjoy it.
I've played just about every Star Trek related game that's out there. Some of them were pretty good, but most of them lacked something especially the space combat games. Up till now the best one was Starfleet Academy. But the problem with that game was the starship you commanded felt more like a fighter craft than a huge starship.

Well for the first time, a star trek game actually makes you feel like you're commmanding a starship!! The 3-D space combat simulation is outstanding. First of all, the combat is truly in 3 dimensions now...do you remember Starfleet Command? That stupid game looked like it was in 3-D but you were really just turning left and right. In Bridge Commander, you really do go in every possible direction.
The combat is excellent. What they've done is they made each ship has weaknesses and strengths. For example, the Sovereign class starship has amazing phasers and quantum torpedos. But she's not nearly as manueverable as the Bird of Prey. You have phasers in the front part of the saucer and sides and underneath the saucer section. Once you deplete the lasers in the front section you need to turn your ship so the enemy is facing the sides, so you can use your side phasers. Then as you turn around, and give the enemy your backside you can unleash twin quantum torpedos. The torpedos have limited tracking ability, they can easily miss the target. Its somewhat similar to the way they worked in Star Trek II the movie.
The graphics are so beautiful in this game...I would sometimes just turn my ship this way and that admiring her lines and forget that some guy on the internet in a romulan warbird was about to unleash a volley of disruptor fire on me.
The only negative of this game, is the network module. Whoever designed that part of it was sleeping at the wheel. For the most part, it works..but it can't handle lag at all. If there is any lag, the game appears to lock up or crash...its incredibly annoying to be seconds away from blowing a bird of prey to pieces and the whole thing freezes. I am praying and hoping that they come out with a patch soo to fix these bugs.
If they don't fix them, the game is still fun because of the Single Player missions.
The game has a single player portion where you are the captain of a galaxy class starship. You go through several missions, which of course include combat. The storylines aren't bad..they did some nice work there.
But I think the future of this game is the network play...if they can get that fixed...then I'll be playing this game for a looong time.
I heard they have some mods coming out already...more ships! right now in the original game, you only have the akira class, sovereign, ambassador (enterprise c ), nebula and galaxy class. You also have a bird of prey but its from the TNG series...which is slightly smaller than the one in the movies.
You also can be a stupid ferengi warship which is weaker than a bird of prey, and you can be a cardassian galor class ship.
There are a couple more ships too which you can find out about on the game web site.
