Grease_Police's Full Review: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for PlayStation 1
I purchased Legacy of Kain - Soul Reaver after playing a very short demo on the start up disk which came with my playstation machine. The first time I played it, I couldn't figure out how to use the controls, since Azriel is underwater and its confusing the first time being underwater. So, my first time playing the demo was frustrating. After a few weeks, I played it again, and was instantly motivated to buy the game. The only problem was that it had not come out yet. I had to wait a few months and finally I had it. It is a fantastic, soul sucking adventure in which the player will be drawn into the game and live it through the eyes of the character, which here happens to be a funny looking vampire by the name of Azriel.
The game is very easy to play. The first part of the game introduces the player on the different moves, how to fight, jump, suck souls, "fly" etc. Without this part of the game, it would of taken longer to play, so it was nice of the programers to help out the player.
Legacy of Kain - Soul Reaver is actually not just one game, but two. The player has the ability to shift in-between the physical realm and the spectral realm. The player has abilities in both worlds which come and go depending on which realm they are in. There is no confusion on which realm you are in, since the life meter in the bottom corner changes each time and so the player can tell immediately which realm they are in. This is a long playing game with many challenges and puzzles.
If you are thinking of buying this game and solving it quickly, then this is definately not the game for you. This game took me months to solve. And when I finally did solve it, I started over and played it again. I have played this game and solved it over 5 times!! Just because it is a spectacular game with eye-popping graphics and incredible to play.
This game is not for the faint of heart. It is violent and bloody in parts. You have to remember who you are controlling. The player is playing a vampire which sucks souls from its victims instead of blood, but there are still many foes that one has to battle to get to the end. There are quite a few cinematic sequences which have gore attributed to them. Very cool and awesome, but violent and bloody.
