sunwolf's Full Review: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for PlayStation 1
All right. So this second 'Legacy of Cain' game knocks the socks off the original. So the graphics and moody music put you right in the game. So the actual fighting of the monsters is great fun and pretty easy to learn to do well. So the thing is highly addictive. So the in-game cinemas are detailed and fun to watch without being too obtrusive to the gameplay. So what could I possibly find wrong with this, possibly the best effort from EIDOS since the 'Tomb Raider' series?
I'll save that for the end. They did.
First, let's expand a little on the strong points of this fine Playstation title. I have to admit, THIS GAME ROCKS! I really haven't ever had this much fun playing a first/third person game in a long time.
You are cast as the former vampire and minion of Kain, Razael. After angering the great and powerful 'king of vampires' by growing a pair of batwings before he does (why, the audacity!), you are cast down to die.
However...
You are saved by an unknown force and converted in to an 'immortal' with the ability to shift between dimensions (the here-and-now, and the Netherworld) and the dubious need to feed upon the souls which you reave from their host creatures (mostly vampires). Hence the name 'Soul Reaver'. You later acquire a legendary weapon of the same name.
Anyways your mission is to track down Kain and the rest of his minions. As you kill each one you gain a new special power, such as the ability to walk through solid objects. Kain's minions are not easy to kill, but with just the tiniest bit of thought, you can easily best each of them.
Kain himself is, of course another matter...
Know that this game is WAY fun to play and I AM giving it 5 stars just on the merits of it's gameplay and coolness. But know this also:
Originally this game was to be released on 2 discs as a completed game. When you get to the end all you get is a "TO BE CONTINUED" message. There is no end until 'Soul Reaver 2' comes out (if then...). I guess they figured they could double their money by delaying the release of the second disc and charging us all over again for it. Poor sports these videogame companies.
Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver tells the story of Raziel, one of the undead lieutenants of the vampire lord Kain. Jealous of Raziel's newly evolved wings,...More at eBay
