| roynyr's Full Review: Madden NFL 2000 for PlayStation 1 |
Madden 2000 is without a shadow of a doubt the best football game available for the Playstation. My title is how John Madden describes the action on NFL Football each Sunday on television and when you play Madden 2000 you almost feel like you are at the game. I have purchased the Madden series of video football games from Electronic Arts sports since way back in the beginning when they were being made for the original Nintendo ( I think it was Madden '94 at that time) and I have always bought the new EA Madden game each year since that first one because it is an outstanding, easy to play, graphically phenomenal game.
Color commentary on the game is provided by John Madden, a former coach of the Oakland Raiders who is recognized as the preeminent commentator in the NFL today. Along with Pat Summerall, a former kicker with the New York Giants who has been a broadcaster for over two decades, they paint the picture of the game with their words. To be honest, after playing about ten times, the commentary can be predicted ( for instance, Summerall's, "Flags fly" whenever a penalty is called ). But, it is still fun to have and adds to the game.
I had bought NFL Gameday two years ago and was less than impressed with the game play. I thought it was somewhat choppy and not great play sequencing. But Madden 2000 has outstanding play formation and the action on the field is very realistic as well.
The playbook is extremely well designed and flexible. By that I mean that you can run a few plays over and over again because it is simple to repeat the same type of play. Or, on the other hand, you can be creative and run a more complex offense, a Bill Walsh San Francisco west coast offense if you will.
Madden 2000 offers the user a variety of play modes. You can play single game, exhibition mode. There is also a season or a franchise mode available too. You can also play a playoff tournament. The franchise mode is the most fun in my opinion. You can draft players at the beginning of the year, make trades for the long term, see players retire, and also watch your players develop from unproven rookies to all star veterans. A lot of decision making is involved in the franchise mode.
Obviously, the best way to play Madden 2000 is versus someone else and not the computer. I have had many a classic battle with this game versus friends. Nothing better than playing Madden in the morning, then watching some Sunday afternoon football.
The passing game takes some getting used to by novices. However, for those Madden veterans it is a snap. Hard to explain but the passing game requires a special touch when playing, it takes practice. Madden 2000, by the way, offers a practice field for you to develop your game skills. But to be totally honest, you would be better off playing versus the computer a practice or exhibition game to get used to it.
Overall, Madden 2000 is the best football simulation available for the Playstation. As Madden would say," Hey...it's a great game...go get it!."
