infielderx's Full Review: Medal of Honor for PlayStation 1
If the real world was like a computer game, the good guys would only need 1 man (or woman) to conquer thousands of bad guys. There would be powerups and health packs located around every corner, even in hostile territory. I suppose this person, however, would feel very used and would demand mucho dinero.
In Medal of Honor, you are that lone good guy, out to win World War 2 seemingly all by yourself. You storm a beach in Normandy, drive an enemy tank, infiltrate enemy airfields and bunkers, and basically do anything James Bond could ever dream of.
You start the game in an enemy cargo truck, being driven by one of your camrades, and you're stationed in the back of the truck with several other soldiers. As you make it through several German checkpoints, you almost feel the inevitability of death. The truck stops so a German officer can check out the papers of the driver; Tensions rise when the German realizes the driver is an imposter. Tempers flare, and the gunfight begins. Fortunately, you're not the only cannon fodder. A half-dozen or so other soldiers, who were sitting in the back with you, help you get inside your first objective, the enemy compound. Don't get too emotionally attached, however, your buddies will soon drop like flies.
You'll notice immediately, if you're any sort of hard-core FPS gamer, that there is no blood in this game. As realistic as the death animations are (and they are gruesome), the abscence of gore is disappointing. A game like this, which in every other aspect shows off it's graphic detail (explosions, character models, vehicles, weapons, et al)should complete the realism and truely show the horror of war. Perhaps the developers of this game should have taken a page from Soldier Of Fortune's manual, and added damage zones as well. Aside from that beef, I only have one other: the game is too linear. In true "Doom" style, there is only one way to your objective. Sure, you can explore, but ultimately there is only one way to your objective. You are even guided by an "objective compass" which points you in the exact direction of your mission.
Another strong point of this game is the sound. From the bullets hitting your body to bouncing off walls, or into the snow; the tanks grinding their way through rubble; windows shattering; you get the idea. With a decent sound system, you almost feel like you're within a warzone.
I suppose in summary this game is worth purchasing, although I'd wait until it came down a few bucks. Sure, it has replayibility; the online game is excellent (despite the lack of gore).
If you ever wondered what it would be like to land on a Normandy beach (an extremely exciting level) or walk in fear of snipers (a-la "Full Metal Jacket"), this game is for you.
