| Elasto's Full Review: MediEvil 2 for PlayStation 1 |
Allright, kids, the C. I. Y. H. (Chip In Your Head) is calling from this one, too. MediEvil2 is the answer to everyone who said "MediEvil is neat, but it gets really boring." I dare you to get bored this time. I just dare ya.
Of course it just wouldn't be MediEvil(2) without Sir Daniel Fortesque and a host of horrific puns. The game play is clean with nicely cut scenes and, for the most part, obvious puzzles. It's really a lot of fun to watch, and then one day the Chip makes you play it.
About forty-five minutes into the game you realize that it's not as easy as it looks. The control is as crisp as the animation - it's learning to use Dan's skills that is the hard part. Sony "one upped" us with the difficulty of MediEvil2 - Dan is going to sweat this time.
Of course the difficulty wouldn't be fun if there weren't new skills to get past the problems. Listing them off would spoil the surprise, but rest assured Dan's head is indeed his most powerful tool. All I will suggest is to explore everywhere, read everything, and remember that there must be a way somewhere.
With the important parts out of the way I have room for the storyline. Last time I couldn't help but snicker as Dan tried to live up to his name and really be a Hero. This time, proven to be one, he has to do it again. It seems as if the integrity of the plot suffered a little from the first MediEvil to our sequel, but the stages on their own are wonderful. The ideas are all period concepts for nineteenth-century England and the mapping supports them fully. Reading a little Mary Shelley or H.G. Wells would be a great warm up for Dan's adventures.
On the whole I recommend MediEvil2 as a good game to waste an afternoon with, but not to spend weeks solving. Keep working on it in your spare time and you'll smile your way to the end. And I can guarantee that in a year it will still be fun.
