Pros: Great Gameplay, Good Storyline, Very Original.
Cons: A bit difficult for some.
This game is excellent. You dont get hooked straight away like on the final fantasy games, which in my opinion are the greatest games ever made and the most addictive. The further you go into the game the more the storyline unfolds with many twists and turns and the more you get hooked. I was on this game every day almost until I completed it.
The leading character is called Solid Snake who (with a little help from a few people along the way and a lot of help from weapons, ammo and other goodies you pick up along the way) goes alone to stop a nuclear threat from a large terrorist organisation who have their hands on a large stealth robot (real James Bond like). One thing that I would suggest doing is read the manual before you start. I dont usually do this but on this game it tells you all the techniques you will need to complete the game. The game is played in normal mode and when you get spotted by a guard (or camera) it turns to alert and then youve got to take cover or youll have what seems to be the whole army after you, this adds a great feel of realism to the game. If you are skillful you can stalk the shadows without ever setting the alert mode of and therefore only getting into fights with the bosses and the traps to catch you along the way. Sometimes there are loads of guards around but you can knock on the walls to fool them and even sneak up behind a few and strangle them to death without them being able to sound the alarm.
You start the game with only a codec, a pair of goggles and a pack of cigarettes. The cigarettes are supposed to be used to see the laser alarms but these are much easier to see with the thermal goggles and this doesnt damage your health, so the cigarettes arent really of any use. The goggles are used to zoom in on things far away. The codec is a piece of communications equipment where you can get hints of your boss and others; it is also the way you save your game. As the game progresses you gain different types of weapons and other goodies. You also encounter many traps and bosses along the way. Each boss has different strengths and weaknesses and you have to figure out a way to beat each boss. These bosses can be quite challenging and you can get quite frustrated.
The game has various FMV sequences in the game, which compared to the quality of the game, are a bit of a disappointment especially if you compare them to the excellent FMVs in the Final Fantasies on the Playstation.
There are many twists in the plot, you really cant trust anyone just like it would be in real life, friends turn to enemies and you also end up fighting your brother who in a great twist is the leader of the terrorist organisation.
At the end the terrorists decide to launch a nuclear attack on China and you have to defeat the stealth robot controlled by your brother yourself, which is easy (not). The game has 2 different endings depending on decisions you have made during the game which I think was the first time this was done (dont quote me on that). If you like a challenge then this is the game for you it is simply brilliant. I havent played the newer version on the PS2 or similar games like splinter cell as I do not own a ps2 but if they as good as these then I think they will be worth a look too.
