Snake Returns To Save The World. Again.

Written: Feb 24 '01
Pros:Alot of movie clips, great soundtrack, fantastic weapons, learning how to play is easy.
Cons:Stupid artificial intelligence, too many movie clips, characters know it's a game.
The Bottom Line: You can easily get 20 bucks to buy this game, so now you have no excuse.

Konami has really showed their true colors now. Solid Snake has appeared in two games on the Nintendo Entertainment System, but has been missing in action ever since. Now, the world's fate calls on him once more. There's no doubt about it, you will once again experience the ride of a lifetime.

Once again, some nut is out to destroy the world and Snake has to stop him. The storyline isn't too great, but Hideo Kojima makes it spectacular. The character development in this game are simply amazing. They just act right in front of you. Metal Gear Solid is more like a movie than a game, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it's pretty cool, but it does come with a price. Would you play this game over and over? No. Just like you wouldn't watch the same movie over and over. You know exactly what's gonna happen, so why would you play again? It's important to know that movie clips don't make a game, they should only expand on it. We would just be watching the game rather than playing it.

Metal Gear Solid is very realistic. Unlike other games (Goldeneye or Perfect Dark), you're only one man. You cannot take out a dozen men and live to tell about it. You cannot survive after being shot a million times, running into explosions, or gain an extra life meter just by equipping some body armor. But there's a contradiction right here. As realistic as Metal Gear Solid is, I hate the fact that every character in the game KNOWS that they're in a game. Like when Campbell says, "Plug your Controller into Controller port 2". But this is not a bad thing either, because I'm sure alot of you are too lazy to read your manual.

You play as a spy, and you have to keep it that way. You can't go around killing everyone. If someone gets in your way, you sneak up behind them, and silently snap their stinkin' necks! But you know what's so stupid? Their bodies disappear and you never get caught! Well, that's not stupid, but that is so unrealistic. And you know what else? The artificial intelligence is so stupid. If you get caught, or you don't, they continue on as if nothing happened. Get caught, hide behind something, wait a few seconds, and watch them go back to their posts as if nothing happened.

There are a fair amount of weapons and equipment to help you. Shoot some people, blow things up, relax and have a few smokes, and hide in some boxes. Yes, hide in some cardboard boxes. What's that? You don't want to be a coward? Okay, tough guy, set up some mines and watch some unsuspecting guard step on it. You can also refill your health by eating. And if you're ever in trouble, contact your friends by Codec (a small phone in your ear). Finally, the game is so realistic that everything in it is based on truth. No, someone didn't plug their controller into a different port to beat some psycopath. No, he didn't instantly recover his health from food. But instead, every item in that game exists in reality. The SOCOM, the rations, and even the stealth armor.

The soundtrack in this game is simply incredible. The music fits the plot perfectly. From the creepy music of Psycho Mantis, to your great escape at the end of the game, the music will have your heart pumping. The sound in this game are just amazing. Even the beeping of the Codec sounds realistic!

The graphics in this game are great as well. But they could have been better, because it is a little blurry.
The movie clips are breathtaking. It has a movie feel to it, and legible captions to go along with it. Not only that, but you can see the movement of your comrades in the Codec calls. You can actually see their lips move. You can see them laugh. Everything is clear as day.

Metal Gear Solid is just simply incredible. It could tell if you're using a turbo controller or play Konami games. With realistic cutscenes, an incredible storyline, great combat, fun bosses, and many other goodies, Metal Gear Solid is a must-have and one of the best Playstation games ever.
