Jello77's Full Review: NBA Live 99 for PlayStation 1
Want a good basketball game that will keep you hooked? Look no further than NBA Live 2000. Too bad this isn't NBA Live 2000, but it--okay, so it doesn't come very close to that. But it's still pretty good.
The graphics are actually pretty good (about a 7.5 out of ten), you can really see the players moving and sometimes (on instant replays) you can see their great, detailed, Nike shoes. The face details are some of the best I have ever seen on a basketball game, showing Shaq's big, lovable face and Barkley's cool, cursing face. When players are taken out of the game, either for subs or for fouling out, it shows a close up of them cursing. You can't really see the separate curses, but you can see them talking to themselves and you know that they are cursing. It's just what basketball players do.
The dunks are pretty nice, from alley-oops to dunking from the three point line (if you know how). These guys can really fly. Seriously, you can see Hakeem Olajuwon with his knees over the basketball rim.
The season mode is okay, but nothing really all that special. You can set the games to normal, fifty-six games, or 28.
The playoffs are the same as the games--you don't really get tougher opponents, so I can't put it as a positive thing.
The stimulation is always weird, if you get all the best players in the league and stimulate all your games, you still have a chance to not make the playoffs and lose to the Clippers.
The thing that I hate most in this game is that there are no rookies. How the heck am I supposed to make a Rockets team without Cuttino Mobley? Jeez!
Your trades can be set to either be fair or the computer has no say in the trade (so the dream trade of Mario Eilie for Kobe Bryant can finally come true!). I like to do the fair way, unless I feel I need someone real bad (Matt Bullard for Glen Rice).
NBA Live 2000 is still the king, but this is a good, cheap, runner up.
