Dai15's Full Review: NBA Live 99 for PlayStation 1
Sorry that this review is a year late. Quite frankly, this is the best basketball game ever made for the Playstation. My friends and I started with Live 98, we had our own 3-player league going in my room. Didn't think that very much could be improved with it.
Until Live 99 came out. For this, we drafted our own teams for our league, with a whiteboard for our standings, we had fun writing special updates and news stories with plenty of humor and trashtalking. At the end we had voting for MVP, Rookie of the Year, All-NBA, etc. It was so much fun.
The gameplay here is a lot smoother and quicker than Live 2000, which is a little too realistic. We found the game to be dominated by big strong players who could "powerdunk". Powerdunk is when you hold the L2 button and hit square...the guy turns almost sideways, cocks the ball back and jams it...Powerdunkers rule the game - Shaq (get SHAQ), Malone, Duncan, Webber, etc. Powerdunking leads to a lot of fouls for the opposing team, and if you have a big guy you can dunk from almost the free throw line. It's most effective if you find a big crowd of people, head right towards it and dunk through them...you'll almost always pick up a foul. Small guys who can powerdunk are a plus too, like Iverson, Eddie Jones, etc.
Defense is really important too - the R2 button is key because it forces a lot of turnovers. You gotta learn how to use it right to be successful. Use it to cut off drives, draw charges, and forces missed dunks.
I admit there are some disappointing aspects to the game. The rookies weren't created yet, and you had to make a lot of trades to make the rosters right. But the graphics and the gameplay are pretty good. The key is to get some friends who like to play also, and make it competitive. That always makes it fun, especially if you are all short tempered.
