QueenLyssa's Full Review: Pac-Man World for PlayStation 1
When I was a kid, arcades were different. There was air hockey, skeetball, and a bunch of pinball machines. Then along came Pac. Suddenly arcades were full of electronic blip-blip-blips of Pac dots being consumed. There were Pac Man t-shirts, Pac Man lunchpails, even Pac Man candies. Yes, I came from the age when a circle missing a wedge eating smaller circles and kindergartner ghosts was high tech graphics, man.
Better and more sophisticated games came along, like Frogger, Mario Bros., and the Legend of Zelda, and eventually a whole host of fantastic and detailed games, but Pac Man never died in the hearts of those of us who first experienced the game so long ago. Now he's back, and ready to take on the new generation of video games.
In Pac Man world, not only do we get Pac Man Classic and a more graphically updated version of Pac Man Mazes, but we also get an adventure mode in Pac Man Quest. Pac Man's family has been kidnapped by Toc Man and are being held on Ghost Island, and Pac must search through a variety of worlds to find them.
Pac Man Quest offers some cute graphics and challenging mazes, the Pac Man theme of Pac dots, pellets, and fruit kept around, as well as the infamous baddies, the ghosts. Pac journeys through all sorts of environments, including underwater, to gather the items needed to rescue the various members of his family and progress to the next level. He's got all new moves, including a supercharged run, swimming, and the great butt-bounce where he takes advantage of being a ball to achieve extra height in his jumps. It's not quite as intense as most games, especially in the 3d scenery with a rather static view mode and the sound effects, which continue to be blips and whizzles, but it demands some playing skill towards the end and can hold your interest. It's a bit frustrating for younger kids in the later levels, but most 8 and ups should be able to handle it fine. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it is fun.
Pac Man Classic is just what it sounds like, the old arcade favorite. My skills seem to have deteriorated since my early teens, but it's still a wonderful blast from the past. Don't be surprised if your kids groan, wondering if you had color T.V. as a child, but it can also be used to prove those parental "When I was a kid.." stories quite effectively.
Pac Man Mazes is the same concept as Pac Man Classic, but with much better graphics and themed scenery. On occasion this scenery gets in the way, but three viewing options allow you to switch quickly from seeing the full maze to getting right up close to the action.
The controls are easy to learn and pretty intuitive. The first level of Quest is a tutorial that allows plenty of practice and can be replayed whenever necessary. As far as Classic and Mazes go, hey, it's the d-pad, how much easier can it get?
Pac Man World hasn't forgotten the glory days, and neither have we older fans, but now it's set to capture a whole new generation. It's the perfect family game to get parents reminiscing and kids asking when they can please get their game back.
