Quake 2 is, without a doubt, the most fun you'll ever have with a FPS on the PlayStation, even edging out Medal of Honor (which is excellent). The first thing that caught me about Q2 in the store was its refreshingly low price...$20.99+tax! When I went home and popped it in, I was a bit bummed by the plain menu screens and low quality FMV. Then I played the actual game...and was amazed. The first thing that caught me was the quality of the graphics. Great lighting effects, smooth textures, hyper fast gameplay, neat particle effects, and decent character models...the PlayStation just can't be able to run such a great looking game...but it can, and with relative ease.
Gameplay is very tight thanks in part to the smooth, flexible controls. It is still best to use digital control, but it still feels great. Circle strafing is easy, and blowing up the Strogg guards into little chunks is so effortless...extremely satisfying. That's not to say that there is dumb AI. Enemies rarely miss, and will also be strafing around in order to avoid your shots. Multi player is also fast and fluid, nearly as good as GoldenEye's multi player. Great sound FX and music only serve to highten the experience. Three words: BUY QUAKE 2!
