Everyday I need to have a few hours of playstation to relax. I have around 75-100 games for it, as I tend to play a lot. Sometimes, before I found Epinions, I would play all night, and literally watch the sun come up. There is something wrong with me, I know.
Anyway my latest acquisition is QUAKE 2. I had heard much about this Quake series from online video game players, and it was only good things.
So, when I saw the picture of the fun loving looking robot on the box, I said- WHOA! QUAKE 2! This is that thing all those online gamers with computers way cooler than mine play! I MUST HAVE IT!!!
I didn't play it the first night I had it, but have been faithfully playing it since.
I see what all the fuss is about. This is a great game. The format is that of the 1st person "shooter" view. You are a space marine sent in to destroy a civilization bent on taking over earth and wiping out the inhabitants. The graphics are pretty good, sound is excellent.
BEFORE I WRITE ANY MORE
I want to place a warning here, this is one of those 1st person viewpoint ones, which means you are almost seeing the screen as a 3d moving object, some people find this upsetting to their stomach.
I want to make a special warning to those of you who this does not normally happen to.
DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME AFTER DRINKING HEAVILY
You may not have felt dizzy and sick before, and you may be able to play this game all the time with no problems, but I'm telling you, drinking and QUAKE2 DO NOT MIX.
This is actually a fairly difficult game. Maximize your killing ability by using the right tools for the job. You have a super tough enemy, don't use the machine gun on him, it will use up almost all your ammo! Save those rounds for weaker enemies, ammo doesn't grow on trees here in Quake2.
Finding things is also very difficult. Without a map I am finding it very difficult to figure out where I am going and where I have been. Many stages are vast layouts almost like a giant maze.
The enemy are some sort of mechanical/monster hybrids. Some are very strong and others are really weak and simple to kill, yet they have great damaging power.
One thing I find unique to Quake 2 which I have never seen in any video game (I was kinda redundant there don't you think?)
Is the dying of the enemy. Occasionally when you shoot them and finally kill them, they will not go gently into that dark night. They will instead have that last grasp and attempt to strike back out at you, they will fall over as they all do when killed, pause for a second then often times raise up just a little and be able to get a few more shots off at you just before they die.
This is a creative, if highly morbid and violently disturbing to some people, touch, but I found it such a new concept that I love it, and am kind of sad when they don't try to shoot me again.
Now don't go and say this is a bad game. The violence is kept right in the playstation, I don't carry it outside and go shoot up everyone.
After all, I don't have time for that, I have Epinions to read!
QUAKE 2 UPDATE
game finished, WOW WHAT A SIMPLE FINAL LEVEL BOSS.
So SIMPLE to beat, just run down to the left when you go up to the final level, go under the ground into the little tunnel, use either the machine gun or chain gun, empty the thing on the big robot, he will die, and a new little one will come out, the little one is very dangerous and can shoot at you down in your tunnel, so shoot him and run left behind the other wall so he can't get you again, use the rocket launcher and rail gun. It'll be all over for the guy, now go find the exit jump in your ship and you're all done.
