| disgustipated's Full Review: Road Rash 3D for PlayStation 1 |
I was brought up with the Road Rash series and when I heard that a new Road Rash was out, I instantly went out and bought it. I have a soft spot for all the Road Rash games but this one is the one I love the most. This game is one of the most fun games ever. Its very, very addictive.
I was impressed when I saw the new 3d graphics for Road Rash and the smoothness of the game. What I didn't know was how the gameplay was created so well that this game could get up to my second favourite game of all time.
My first impression was that some of the riders looked cool and some looked dumb but I soon got over that. I had great difficulties as I kept crashing and getting caught by the cops but after time I got past the learning curve and I cruised (having loads of fun) through the levels.
One aspect of the game is how hard it gets when you advance to the next level but the programmers give you a chance and through determination you can be the best rasher and win all the races.
The gameplay for Road Rash is fairly simple. You ride a motorcycle and race, but you beat up your opponents at the same time ( while on the bike of course ) and you steal their weapons. You can get a variety of weapons including a club, a lead pipe, a 2X4, mace etc. You get money for winning and you can buy better bikes. There are 12 bikes to choose from. There is four gangs with three bikes each. There is lots of obstacles you can crash into ( and lots that will save you from crashing ) and cops who come after you and if you fall of your bike ( Getting beaten off by a rasher of crashing into an obstacle ) with a cop near you you get caught and you have to pay a fine and start the race over. If you crash too much and wreck your bike ( Some classes of bike are more durable than the others ) you will have to start the race over again. You can run over pedestrians, which is a lot of fun and you get an extreme amount of satisfaction when you hit another rasher with a weapon ( I have to say punching isn't all that spectacular ). You can kick you opponents square in the face ( ow! ) and be a hooligan and hold the kick button and your rasher will ride with his leg up! The controls are nice and simple but one really annoying aspect is when I let go of the accelerator slow down and my rasher does a wheelie! That almost always makes me crash.
The four gangs are :
The Desades, who ride the Rat bikes and have CIV as their music while in their clubroom.
The Techgeists ( My favourite ), who ride the Sport bikes and have The Tea Party ( My second favourite band) and Full on the Mouth as their music.
The Kaffe Boys who ride the Racers and have Sugar Ray ( My eighth favourite band ) and Kid Rock as their music.
The Dewleys who ride the Cruisers and have The Mermen as thier music.
The Game modes available are :
Thrash : You pick any bike and any track and race. Once you've qualified ( 1st, 2nd or 3rd ) on all the tracks you move on to the next level. There's no gangs in this mode and you don't keep the weapons you steal. I don't spend that much time on this mode but it's still a worthy addition.
Big Game : You enter your name and buy a bike ( You also choose gang here. Eg. If you bought a Cruiser you would go into the Dewleys gang, Which means people from your own gang wont hurt you unless provoked ). You start at your gangs' club and listen to the things your club members are saying ( Which often includes pay outs of other gangs! ) and you pick a track and race. You advance to the next level when you qualify for all the tracks ( You also get to watch a 'Next Level' movie. Unlike in the Thrash game mode, you keep all the weapons you steal. You can change gangs by buying another gangs bike.
Time Trial : Pick ANY bike and any track and race against the clock and set new records. You can turn AI Rashers on and off, but I usually use this mode to have a cruise around the interlinked country. I know most of the turns and where they will lead you as a result of playing this game for a very large amount of time. You can go the wrong way and have a cruise and enjoy the scenery but unfortunately you can only cruise for 20 minutes. You can play with up to six players and see who is the best racer. Once again, Unfortunately there is no split screen mode but that doesn't matter seeing how brilliant the single player gameplay is. In the country there is a city section ( Which includes a chinatown, industrial slums harbour etc ) , a forest section ( It has a really cool castle and a wicked downhill turnathon ) , a desert section ( The danger zone as it has really hard turns ) and a grassy countryside ( With a barn, church , beach ) .
The Restroom has various options like load and save, change music etc.
The music for this game is top stuff. The bands are CIV, The Mermen, Sugar Ray, Full on the Mouth, The Tea Party and Kid Rock.
The title movie has 'Speed Home California' as the background and it works very well. The actual movie is cool but there isn't enough punching. The soundtrack fits really well with the game, and good for me most of it's my type of music.
Compared to the other Road Rashes this one is harder earlier on and it's got more of a racing element to it ( Which makes it much more fun and intense ) and its not cartooney ( Which is also good , but I didn't think so when I first played it ). This games got a wicked sense of speed and the whole thing is really intense, especially ewhen you get good at it. It's a difficult game, but that just makes it better. It's the first really challenging game that I enjoyed! I normally hate games that are hard. I love the scenery in this game.
Now going through the whole gang idea and the various motorcycles available.
The Desades ride the Rat bikes, which are for street riding and they are generally the most durable out of all the classes. You get a musculy rider who is the best at fighting and you'll often find members of the Desades gang come up to you looking for a fight. In the club room they've got some stupid clown who is very annoying. Their clubroom is in the bottom left part of the country which is near the industrial slums and the urban sprawl.
Scavenger 250 (Level 1 Bike) : It's the slowest out of the classes available and its fairly easy to handle. It does huge skids! 8/10
Predator 750 (Level 2 Bike) : It's handling takes a while to get used to. It does even bigger skids than the Scavenger. It looks killer! 8/10
Executioner 1000 (Level 3 Bike) : It does the biggest wheelies imaginable. The rider is the ultimate rebel with the chains and all. 9/10
The Techgeists ride the Sport bikes which in my opinion are the best bikes by far. Wicked handling and descent speed and durability. This club mainly focuses winning the race so I usually find myself the only one fighting! Thier clubroom is in the top right of the country, in the forest.
Dumoto 500 (Level 1 Bike) : It's the starter bike I always use. Looks cool and you can actually stay on it without falling off! 9/10
DMG 747 (Level 2 Bike) : The rider on this bike sits straight at all times! Easy handling once you get used to it. 9/10
Dumoto 999 (Level 3 Bike) : This is easily the best bike in the game. Handling so much easier than other level 3 bikes and looks awesome! 10/10
The Kaffe Boys ride the racers, which are designed for turning corners with ease and surviving the twist and turns of the city. Twitchy handling but the speed achievable by these bikes is astounding. They are mainly japanese people. They are very aggressive and fight as much as the desades do. Their clubroom is in the bottom right section of the country.
Firecracker 250RR (Level 1 Bike) : This is one of the best starter bikes but sometimes it slips for no reason. 8/10
Missileblade (Level 2 Bike) : This bike looks awesome but its handling is fairly bad but when you get used to it theres only fun from then on. 6/10
Tsunami (Level 3 Bike) : This bike is very twitchy but its easier to handle than the missileblade. 7/10
The Dewleys ride the Cruisers which is in my opinion the worst class of bike for aiming to win the races but of course its so fun cruisin' around the countryside! These are bikies. They all have long beards. They don't usually start fights. They usually wait until you start on them. Their clubroom is in the top left section of the country.
Rattler (Level 1 Bike) : This is a pretty good starter bike. It has very slow handling though. 8/10
Razorback (Level 2 Bike) : This one is one of the worst bikes. It takes a long time to be able to ride it properly. 5/10
Hammerhead (Level 3 Bike) : The fastest bike available but its also the hardest to handle! 6/10
When I got this game I played it in any free time I got. My life was dominated by it. The Replay value of this game for a year is wicked. Their was a boring patch for me after a year, but that didn't last very long and I was playing it again. I hope this has shown you the passion I have for this game. Thanks for reading and if you ever play this game, give it a fair go. Don't just play it for a bit and say it sucks. If you go deep into this game it will give you great rewards.
