Jrocket's Full Review: Road Rash 3D for PlayStation 1
Do you have what it takes to go flying through a twisting forest road at over a hundred, dodging cars, pedestrians, and other bikers trying to knock you off your bike? Well, if you play this game your about to find out. This game is a lot of fun, but it has its faults.
There are a few playing options to choose from, which helps keep the game from getting boring. For example you can choose what kind of bike to ride, and simply by choosing a style of bike you get inducted into a biker gang. If you get on a cruiser you are in the cruiser gang, who will defend you against other rival gangs if they are close enough.
There are lost of roads to choose from, with many different types of landscapes to race through. Everything from forest roads, to coastal beaches, dairy fields, industrial centers, light residential neighborhoods ,to inner cities. And all the tracks are connected, which is pretty good. Like they scanned a county map, and you race from one point to another on it. As you get to higher levels you race farther, take different roads, and different combinations of roads.
The graphics of this game are pretty good, the bikes and riders look amazing, the cars look close enough to the real thing to identify what they are. The background looks as good as it needs to while your zipping through it on your bike.
Sound effects are really good, each bike has its own sound, so you can tell if a superbike is catching up to you, or a hell's angel is. You can hear other bikers yelling insults at you, and hear their screams as you nudge them into the grill of an on coming car. Cars honk their horns at you if you are in their lane giving you enough warning to get out of their way most of the time. However the soundtrack is very annoying. Most of the music is punk, which is ok for a short period of time, but after you have been racing a while it just gets flat annoying. I opted to turn the volume of the music all the way down.
The riding is pretty realistic. The bikes handle pretty well, and if you get the hang of it you can really get them moving on really tight roads. However this is where i have a few complaints. If by chance you get pushed off the road and your on your bike, there are a few bugs in the game. I have actually had my hand pushing all the left controls and had the bike turn to the right before. Very annoying when you were in first and now your in last. Sometimes the bike will get stuck behind a tree or a sign with no way to reset it. Sometimes the bike just has a mind of its own but no game is perfect.
The fighting is a blast. You can choose from a 2X4, or a crow bar, a cattle prod, and even mace. Some of the weapons are a lot of fun, some are more useless then they are good. But there is nothing like the feeling of knocking that guy off his bike after he pushed you into a car. Or nailing the cop who has been chasing you down the last mile.
Some of my other complaints of this game are the cut scenes after the races are really cool, but with only a few to see they get old real fast. Then Some of them are just bizarre, and you can't turn them off. The game could also be improved by the ability to upgrade your bike without buying a new one. Like putting better tires on, or a better exhaust, to give you that extra edge. And lastly, there are only four levels. The first one is way to easy, but its good for beginners, the other two levels are pretty good, but the fourth level is nearly impossible. I have been trying on and off for months and i still can't beat it.
Its a great game, I am addicted to it, even though i can't beat the last level. Its a lot of fun and very addicting. While the game has it's problems, its a lot of fun. Give it a try, im sure you will be as addicted to the game as i am.
