snowy2001's Full Review: Sim Theme Park for PlayStation 1
With all the new Sim games out (The Sims, Livin Large, House Party, Sim Theme Park, Rollercoaster Tycoon...), a sim game such as this is like the airplane of the 1940's;old and primitive.
The game begins with you making a profile of yourself and your park...your park name, your name, how hard you want the game to be...and then choosing a location (I think the only place you can "choose" is the UK). Once you've bought the land, a little man in a top hat on the bottom of your screen gives suggestions on what to do and how to do it. You can choose, in the beginning, from a small number of shoppes, rides, and add-ons (plants, outhouses, etc), and as the game progresses you get more and more (you can speed up how fast your company produces rides or shoppes or add-ons or staff). You must employ the right people, such as security guards, repairmen, handymen and entertainers. When you've built your park, set a ticket price and open it up. After a couple seconds a bus pulls up and lets people out. Little bubbles over their head let you know what they think at the moment, and you can react accordingly (if everyone has hamburgers in their bubbles, you know to put a food stand closer by).
The game interface, as I've said, is very primitive. The graphics are a joke, and the only thing worth mentioning is the ride simulations. Some rides have buttons you can press that let you, the player, experience the ride. The graphics in that are quite amazing, as is the music. Other than that, the main game screen is ridicilous, and if you have poor eyesight, save yourself the aggrivation. You won't be able to see a thing, because the text is very tiny, the options are tiny, the entire game is tiny.
Other drawbacks of the game are extremely obvious. One, if your park has a ton of people, you can't always check their bubbles. Two, after awhile, you get tired of waiting around for more rides and shoppes. Three, you can run out of money FAST, and once you're "in the red", it's near impossible to get out.
You might find yourself playing for hours, but not because it's so much fun. It's not. The reason you might play for a long time is because, like me, you'll want to see if you can actually get something out of it besides debt and a headache.
All of a sudden, it's the end of the year, and you are either totally bankrup or starting fresh. You can build a new park or try to salvage what's left of your old one. However, if you want FUN, save your money and buy something else.
