Puzzle Fighter: Street Fighter Fun For Everyone!

Written: Jan 08 '01 (Updated Jan 08 '01)
Pros:Fun, cute, and challenging.
Cons:A bit repetitive after a while, not much fun single player.

Man, what a game this was. As simple a concept as this is, this game is pretty damn addictive. It didn't look like much at first, it's basically a simple "Columns" variant with a couple twists, but once you get into the game, it's fast and furious, and even those innocent, non-competitive girls you know will turn cheap and cutthroat on you.

How To Play

The computer will drop little gems at you, a 1x2 piece at a time. The gems come in 4 different colors if I remember right, but anyway, your goal is to try and get 3 of them in a row so they'll break.

You can do little things like chain breaks for more points, or just try and build one huge crystal with them, and shower your opponent with bricks. The chains do more damage because they multiply, and also, it's easier to set them up than it is to get one long continous block of the same color.

If your opponent breaks a significant amount of blocks, then the computer will drop pieces on you with a counter on them. Once the counter hits 0, the blocks will turn into normal gems. This can allow for huge comebacks, because if your player can stay alive long enough for the counter blocks to be converted, easy chains will have appeared depending on the drop patterns your character has, and this generally means bad things for you. It's best not to drop a bunch of little piles on to your foe, as opposed to dropping one huge pile them that will just completely obliterate them.

The Characters

You should recognize most of the gang from Street Fighter games, only they're all SuperDeformed now. Some of the characters you may not recognize are Mei-ling, Donovan, and Morrigan from the Darkstalkers series.

All the characters have their own drop patterns. They look kind of unimportant when you first start playing, but it becomes important later. For exmaple, I think Chun-Li will drop all her pieces in columns. This makes it real easy for your opponent to turn all the bricks you drop on them into points, and in addition, bricks to land on you. Dan will drop only red bricks, so if you haven't killed the other player after 5 turns, and the counter is done, you're pretty much in a BIG world of hurt.

Sounds are pretty nice. They're all basically cutesy versions of what the normal "grown-up" characters would say in their other more fighting-based games, and a most of the BGM music is the same as you'd find it in most other SF games. Beating single player mode will unlock different costumes and sound effects to mess with, so if you're really into the game those goodies may be enough to keep you interested. Otherwise, though, you're probably better off finding a friend to beat up on.

This game is fun for everyone and people who can't play Street Fighter will enjoy watching their little SD character beat their opponent every time you drop a big set of blocks on them. Just make sure you're keeping track of the clock.
