kolider's Full Review: Syphon Filter 2 for PlayStation 1
Before I played this game, I saw many reviews that stated that it really sucked. That it wasn't nearly as fun as the first and that it was very difficult, stupid plot lines and that the weapons were bad as well. I played the game believeing these comments and boy were they wrong! This game is fun, makes sense and doesn't have a heck of a lot wrong with it. Here are some of the many comments I have seen and a response to them. "Every time you pass a level, you usually see Gabe jumping out of the way of an explosion and it just seems like some action movie, nothing more."
Did I miss something? Most of the cutscenes in between levels had the enemies talking and seeing your guys stealth around etc. Only one or two times do we see Gabe jumping out of the way of explosions and all this stuff. Basically at the beginning. The reason I am bringing this up is because people complained that there were too many movies, it seemed like an action movie rather than a game. What a bunch of baloney. The movies were fine and helped move the story along perfectly well. Next. This game was terribly difficult, one area makes you dodge an enemy's grenade fire for a full minute."
Difficult? In the sense that there are insane situations that you can't possibly get out of? That it takes you hours to get through one level? I don't think so. There were quite a few enemies to beat but they honestly were not terribly hard. Headshots were critical, without mastering that your dead. Of course, there were some areas that were hard. First level, taking out the snipers effectivey and taking on the oncoming enemies afterwards. Grenade lobbers from atop buildings. Nonstop enemies in the second last level. Sure, some area need to be hard, but they weren't nearly as hard as certain levels in Syphon Filter 1. Especially since there were no big mid-bosses like the helicopter in the first one. Also, the dodging of a grenade launcher for a minute is easy when you know how to do it. Just stand behind the boxes so he can't see you. You were able to jump in this game, but the game controls it for you." Yah, that kind of sucked but what can you do. If you had to control it, people would complain that they couldn't "judge" certain distances and caused them lots of headaches. It's a lose-lose situation however you look at it. Play the game.
To summarize everything up, the game is a good sequel. Lots of people complained but don't let that fool you. The game is difficult in the sense that you sometimes don't know where to go next. Lots of the game relies on stealth rather then going out, guns a-blazing. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but people seem to like the run and gun style. Listen to what Theresa or Lian has to say when you talk over the walkie-talkie, look at your map, review your objectives, this should all help you find your next target. The game ends of with yet another ? Syphon Filter 3? Yes. For the Playstation? Don't know, but I doubt it. Playstation 2 I assume. But that would turn out to be pretty sweet. Happy gaming.
