ChriseyB's Full Review: Top Gun: Fire at Will for PlayStation 1
Last year when my husband first bought me my Playstation console, we went searching for games. Wanting to find something that he would enjoy playing, I purchased Top Gun – Fire At Will by Spectrum Holobyte. Even though I didn’t think this was a type of game I would play, I figured he would since 1) he likes flight simulator games and 2) he used to work at Top Gun when he was in the Navy.
After owning the game for over a year now and playing it on numerous occasions, I find that this is not the best type of game available. In fact, I find it rather boring and it if wasn’t for the fact that our son likes to play it and once in a while my husband gets inspired to play it, I would have given it away a long time ago.
Top Gun – Fire At Will is for the Sony Playstation Console format only. The idea of the game is for you to become Maverick, the hot shot flying ace of Top Gun. Like in the move, you are flying around in an F-14, finding enemy planes, and shooting them down through out the various missions. Now this part I found rather boring, but then again, this is just me.
On the other hand, I did find one thing that I did like about Top Gun – Fire At Will. It was the video game plays movie clips. While they are not clips from the actual Top Gun movie, they do star the actor who played Maverick’s commander in the movie—James Tolkan.
The game play of Top Gun – Fire At Will was fairly decent. The maneuvers were not really complex to learn and could be figured out within a matter of minutes. The sound was fair for this type of game. They were not spectacular, but they did sound better than other games I have played.
In regards to the graphics, they were not overly impressive, but, then again, they were not all that dull. In some instances, the game did not look like a 32-bit game, but instead better but I mostly noticed this with the movie clips. Like I said, the one thing about the graphics that I did like was the little movie clips between the missions/levels.
Epinioners, I am torn on whether or not to recommend Top Gun – Fire At Will* to you. The reason being is this is not the type of game that I like to play even though I do own it. I am just giving you my experiences when playing it. Therefore, since I cannot recommend it nor can I not recommend it, I am giving the advice to rent the game first. If you do not like it, all you are doing is wasting $3 on a rental and not $20 for the actual game. Therefore, the choice is yours. I personally do not like this game, but maybe this will be the game for you—of course, this is just my Epinion…
