damiendad's Full Review: Torneko: The Last Hope for PlayStation 1
Greetings Dragon Warrior fans.
I have been a Dragon Warrior fan since the old days of the 8 bit nintendo, so I was very excited to see that Enix was bringing it back to life.
Torneko is an interesting game, although the game play is a little strange. The story line is a little hard to follow. You really don't find out what you're supposed to do in the game until it is time to do it.
The game itself is very similar to Zelda in the aspect that there is no battle screen. You see the enemies come toward you, and you hit them with whatever you are carrying.
All Torneko does is explore dungeons. And here is where the strange game play comes in. Every time you enter a dungeon, you start off at level 1 and with only a limited number of items.(You can choose which items to bring. I recommend at least a sword and shield.) And, you can't leave the dungeon until you finish your quest, find a preist or use a magic scroll. If you die in the dungeon, you lose half of your gold and all of the items you found. The only problem here is, you start off every dungeon at level 1, so it is easy to get killed. Even if you finish the dungeon at level 30, you start the next one at level 1.
Another downfall is the number of dungeons (6 I think). Even though the layout of the dungeons are random, when you get to the last one and beat it, the game is over. I beat it after about 10 hours of game play.
Now for a positive note. There is a new feature called a melding shop where you can bring shields and swords to be melded together. For example, if you have a +3 sword that does extra damage to dragons, and a +2 sword that does extra damage to zombies, when you meld them, you get a +5 sword that does extra damage to dragons and zombies. The possibilities are endless. I wound up with a +53 shield that protected me against everything (although that did make all of the monsters less of a threat).
The graphics are kind of primitive. Similar to the old Dragon Warrior style. The benefit to that is very short load times.
In short, I have very mixed feeling about Torneko. However, I think they could have done a better job with it.
Up for grabs is the rare Torneko: The Last Hope for the Sony PS1. This is a spinoff of the classic Dragon Quest series. This is by far one of the most...More at eBay
