| ActionFreak's Full Review: Treasures of Deep for PlayStation 1 |
Treasures or the Deep brings out the treasure hunter in all of us. This beautifully made game lets you explore wrecks for plunder and search for things that have been lost for ages, as well as to uncover a secret lying fathoms deep...
Graphics:
The graphics in this game are very crisp and clean cut. You can see a huge variety of ocean life and they act so realistic you'd think you were watching the Discovery channel. Dolphins, fish, sharks, whales, sea turtles, crabs, and rays are just a few. (I prefer the mermaids!) Shipwrecks are very nicely detailed and so are their treasures.
Sound:
Sound for this game is exceptional. The whales and dolphins make their distinctive songs, and background music gives this exploring game a Tomb Raider of the ocean feel.
Controls:
Controls vary with each ship/sub you control. The handling for the most elite of the ships is very smooth which works very well for many of the tricky maneuvers needed for cave exploring while the controls in charge of weaponry are a tad tricky at times and time consuming in the event of an attack. Once in a while instead of netting an endangered dolphin you may hit the wrong weapon switch key and blow it to smithereens. Very costly penalties ensue thereafter.
Fun Factor:
Once you get past the tricky control factor, the game is alot of fun. However some levels are rather difficult to complete with the amount of air you are allowed to carry and can be frustrating. Their are also hidden pieces of an old artwork type map lying about which when all are found (A difficult task at best) you unlock a great hidden final level. I won't say much but it involves great riches and once thought mythical creatures brought to your eyes. Replay value is moderate. Some levels are fun over and over again, and it's worth playing them all until you find the secrets, but some levels you are glad to be finished with.
