OhNubilousOne's Full Review: Treasures of Deep for PlayStation 1
Treasures of the Deep came out three or four years ago. Looking back at it, the graphics do seem a bit dated even for the Playstation, and the game just feels outdated. Anyway, the basic premise of the game is simple: you are an underwater explorer/treasure hunter and you explore famous underwater wrecks and spectacular scenery in order to locate bars of gold and other artifacts that will earn you more money to buy newer subs and weapons. It seems exciting, but believe me it's not. Most of the missions and levels seem repetitive and gold bars are so hard to locate that you'll find yourself stuck with your beginning-level sub for a long time since you can't afford an upgrade.
The game can also get very frustrating at times. If a particular level sends you searching for five artifacts, you'll probably only find four and spend a good half hour wandering the length of the entire level just looking for that one piece that you missed. The enemies in the game aren't too difficult to defeat, either, so your search through the levels will most likely just turn out to be endless wandering.
The music is okay, but at times the music reverts to so much heavy bass and strings that you'd swear it's just the Jaws Theme played over and over again.
Overall, the game is at best average. You'd be hard pressed to find a good underwater adventure game out there, and I suppose Treasures of the Deep is the best you'll ever find. However, if you're thinking of buying an adventure game that's worthwhile, go somewhere else; Treasures of the Deep is definitely no shining jewel in the massive sea of adventure games.
