offspringer's Full Review: Um Jammer Lammy for PlayStation 1
Um Jammer Lammy is the sequel (of sorts) to PaRappa the Rapper, so it obviously has more of the same; more music, more fun, more game modes, and more absurdly strange storylines. Lammy is a, well... lamb. She plays guitar in a band called MilkCan and her best friend is Katy Kat, the lead singer, who PaRappa players will remember. The game centers around Lammy and her adventures as she tries to get to the big concert on time. Along the way, Lammy will fight a fire, babysit, pilot a plane, and even become a lumberjack, all in the name of music.
If you've played PaRappa before, you'll be familiar with the gameplay, for the most part, as you must face off against characters and copy their beats in rhythm and attempting to earn a "good" rating. The big difference here is that Lammy plays guitar this time around, rather than using rap. Music styles vary, from pop to funk to heavy metal. Um Jammer Lammy is considerably harder than PaRappa was, as the rhythms are sometimes harder to follow and the passages are longer and require more button presses. Obtaining the "cool" rating seems to be more difficult this time around, but now players don't have to play through a stage first before going for "cool." The game also has guitar effects, such as distortion, harmonizing, and flange that add nice touches to the guitar sounds. There's even the ability to bend notes!
Um Jammer Lammy introduces two-player cooperative and competitive modes, high scores, and also allows players to unlock PaRappa for future play! Now, we all know that PaRappa's a rapper, so it should be no surprise that the music changes to a more hip-hop feel! PaRappa has his own storyline, new lyrics, and the ability to play as him adds a lot to the game. He's even available in the two-player modes, so that Lammy and PaRappa can face off and see who is the better... animal. Rumor has it that there's something special is you beat ALL of the stages!
The bottom line here is that Um Jammer Lammy will appeal to PaRappa fans and to music fans. There are some strange occurrences in this game, such as a pregnant women's parade and vomiting caterpillars; there are also strange lyrics and an overall sense of oddity, but that just adds to the charm of the game. In the Japanese version, Lammy actually had a scene in Hell, but that was censored from our version... too bad. There is a lot to like about this game, and it's a lot of fun to play, as long as you have an open mind. So, step on up to the mike and jam on that guitar... it's all in the mind...
