Pros: Fun, much replay value, long season mode, much to do!
Cons: The in-ring music, create-a-superstar mode.
The Bottom Line: SmackDown! is a great wrestling game for people who are just getting into the sport. Heck, it's even great for people who have liked it for along time.

| swanton00's Full Review: WWF Smackdown for PlayStation 1 |
During the summer of 2000 I didn't have much for Playstation games. I was just getting into wrestling and I had wanted a wrestling game. At this time SmackDown was still only a few months old. I had found it used at FuncoLand for $30. That was a good price for the time. I was able to buy it. When I got home I immedeality started playing. It turned out to be my favorite game I had at the time. I kept me entertained for months to come. This was about all I had ever played. There's much to keep you playing. First off, a long season mode with around 240 matches! You can also unlock many hidden things, such as; hidden character parts, and strength points for creating a character. There's an exhibition mode with many types of matches! If your a wrestling fan, then this game would be great for you!
GamePlay: 4 star - good
SmackDown! was the first time this engine was used for a wrestling game in America. It's quite different from anything else. Most wrestling game you would have to lock up and keep pressing buttons to get a move out. Not this, all you have to do is press the circle button and a direction on the d-pad. If you had pressed the button first then you will get the move out. The basically it. The games runs kind of fast. It's not choppy I can assure you that. The basics and must knows are quick to learn but their are some more advanced move like reversals.
SuperStars: 4 star - good
I would say that all of the wrestlers look like they did in the show at the time. Realistic and alive. They have all the stuff like arm pad, elbow pads, writing on theirs suits and more! Their moves are set close enough to what they are in the show. Since the time this game was made, made of the roster in this game have either changed moves, costumes, retired or changed entrances. But still, SmackDown! includes all the top superstars of it's time. Including; The Rock, Triple H, The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Vince & Shane McMahon, Edge & Christian and many more. In total there is 36 superstars. However, you are allowed to create four. So in total you can have 40 wrestlers. That's pretty good for a beginner's wrestling game. SmackDown! 2 has a total of like 76 wrestlers put we aren't talking about that, now are we?
Matches : 4 star - good
SmackDown! offers 12 different types of matches (14 with stipulations). You can different character control types such as; 1P vs COM or 1P vs 2P. If you have a tag than something like this; 1P & COM vs 2P & COM or 1P & 2P vs 3P & 4P. You have different varieties such as; Singles match, tag team, hardcore, handicap, survivals, King of the Rings, and many more!
Exhibition:
This is the mode where you are allowed to choose your match with it's stipulations, titles on the line, and it's players. It can be used for 1P mode or a multiplayer mode.
Season Mode: 3 star - average
This is the mode where you have a career as a superstar! You can use one of the wrestlers from the roster, or one of your created superstars. However, to use a created superstar, you will have to put them through the pre-season mode (see below). There are many things to do and see. Such as many cinematic scenes. You can win 6 of the 7 WWF titles in this mode. Your probably wondering how long it is, right? Well, it's 20 years long. Each year has twelve months. Each month has six matches. You will be in a match a month for most of the months. If you were a match every month then you would be playing 240 matches. But, it's not likely that you will be in a match every month. You can also earn hidden things in the season mode such as; hidden characters (which have to be created), titles, strength points for created characters and more attributes for created superstars.
Pre-Season Mode: 5 star - great
This is the 12 match mode where you can build your created characters stats and attributes. You can make them have good terms with other guys or on bad terms. You can make them have good points and weak points. You will have to beat this mode with all your created characters to enter them in the season mode. This is a cool idea!
Create-a-Superstar: 2 star - bad
This is the worst part to the game. I mean, it's cool to have this mode, but don't make it suck! Your allowed to create a maximum of four wrestlers. It is possible to delete them or copy them once their created. You can set their profiles, moves, name, and more! Sounds cool.....and it is cool except their very little detail allowed to creating them and you can't go back to change anything after their created.
Profiles: Here is where you can set their name, nick name, age, gender, entrance music, favorite superstar (ally), and their hometown.
Attributes: You are allowed to set one for now. You can earn more in the pre-season mode. Examples of these are; good in tag matches, good in different title matches, weak knee, good terms, bad terms, diva, fan favorite, heel (bad guy), and more!
Details: You aren't allowed to set much for this. You can choose a head, upper body, and a lower body, which all are pre set. Meaning, you don't get much control of what your character looks like. Wrestlers from the roster and made up costumes are selectable. Hidden costumes are selectable. Your also allowed to choose the characters height, and width. Short and fat, skinny and short, or how about tall and muscular? You decide!
Moves: You have a certain amount of ability points for your character. Set these points to earn more moves for your wrestler. More can be gotten by playing the season and pre-season modes.
Graphics: 4 star - good
SmackDown!'s graphics are just good. The characters are a little blocky but that's why I don't give it a 5 star. The game runs smooth and UN-choppy. I never had a problem with these graphics.
Sound & Music: 3 star
One big flaw of this game is theirs no commentary and hardly any voice. The in ring sounds are like clashes and bangs and slams. Stuff like that for the hits. The in ring music sucks. It barely fits the game, but it's better than nothing. The music for entrances is just like the show. It sounds mostly clean and just over-all, good.
Final Comments:
SmackDown! is a great wrestling game for people who are just getting into the games of the sport. Heck, it's even great for people who have played and liked them for along time. The one big flaw: the sucky create-a-superstar mode!
