| Pika312's Full Review: WWF Smackdown for PlayStation 1 |
If you remember correctly, Acclaim's WWF Warzone and Attitude were outstanding games. But THQ brings it beyond that. With all the top WWF Superstars and some of the best matches ever, WWF Smackdown is the best sports entertainment game on Playstation.
This game is very fun and easy to get to. Every character has different moves, but doing them is easy. Just press any direction with the grapple or attack button. There are different moves depending on where you stand: in front of your opponent, in back, on the turnbuckle, on the floor, when they're dizzy, etc. Controls are very easy to get used to.
There are many matches and options to go with your matches. You can set rope break on, allow interference, choose a time limit, and the arena which you fight in. These are the matches:
Single Match: with or without managers.
Tag Team Match: a two on two match.
One On Two or One On Three Handicap match: the name says it all.
Battle Royal: where four people eliminate each other and the last man wins.
Royal Rumble: where the only way to be eliminated is to be thrown out of the ring, while more and more opponents come in.
King of the Ring: a tournament where winners fight other winners from their match until there is only one winner left.
Hardcore: no rules!
Anywhere Fall: you can fight backstage.
Cage Match: beat down your opponent, then climb out of the ring.
Survival: a battle royal, but you only need to eliminate one person.
Special Referee: name says it all.
I Quit: the only way to win is to make your opponent submit.
Wait... let me catch my breath... okay. Smackdown has one of the best season modes. You get to see movie clips of what is actually going on, like on TV. Matches are set up, and you can skip them if you don't want to watch them.
Smackdown has one of the WORST Create A Wrestler modes, period. You don't get many features, and you get only heads and bodies to create your dream character. But on the other hand, the Pre-Season mode is one of the best. Vince McMahon tries out your character for a year, and this is where you can make friends and enemies. When you beat Pre-Season, you will have unlocked some secrets, and you can play your wrestler in a real career.
Also one of Smackdown's strong points, there are tons of secrets. You can unlock more heads to make your wrestlers, and more characteristics for your character to be viewed as. There are alot of secrets to uncover, and to truly get them all, you'll have to play for a long while.
Smackdown takes place when Triple H is the champion. There aren't any intros, but there are alot of TitanTron clips, with your wrestler doing some taunts. Unlike Attitude, Smackdown has no voices or commentary.
The graphics of Smackdown are great. They look so real and act well with each other. I especially like when the rope shakes when you throw someone against it.
And the music? Uh... what music? Except for the TitanTron videos, there's only one track, which plays over and over. But why should there be music? It's a wrestling game!
Overall, Smackdown is a great wrestling game. Who wouldn't want to react that famous Mankind vs. Undertaker match, or lay the smack down on Triple H's candy ass? This game is truly amazing. It deserves the title of "The People's Game".
