erik_wisconsin's Full Review: Warzone 2100 for PlayStation 1
Oh, the anticipation of the new game! It is kind of like that new girlfriend...you know the kind... nice packaging, seems cool to hang out with. Only after you invest your hard earned money do you realize that the package was a facade and she really just wants to "get to know" your best friend!! Oh yea, back to Warzone 2100. First off I love military/strategy games. I serve in the Army-Reserve in the Intelligence field and I like to think of it as "training." This game however is way too confusing. I know what your thinking... "I play these types of games to challenge me." Well brother this game will make you want to return to Donkey Kong!! The game itself has a nice concept if not a little worn out: The battlefield of the future. It even comes with a nice scenario complete with a timeline and Project Mission Statement. However the game fails to live up to the hype by trying to outsmart the player. The graphics of the game are surprisingly bland and the directions make "War and Peace" seem like a Weekly Reader! The game's controls are very difficult to master. You have to be ready to give yourself body and soul to this game in order to understand it and even then it seems like it is holding something back from you. The missions are too similar and the complexity of the game takes away from the fact that IT IS A GAME. The reason behind this may stem from the problem that it is difficult to understand what orders you are giving to your troops and how they will respond. It also demands that you research the game for hours and develop a strategy that would make any arm chair General proud, but it frustrates the player by not explaining well enough how to begin... This game needs a tutorial... or an enema. If you are a fanatic about these types of games... Join the military! Serve your country and do the real stuff. If you like to shoot stuff and feel like your the Master of all that you survey... Stick to Command and Conquer!
