briangunn's Full Review: Wild Arms for PlayStation 1
Don't get me wrong. This game is still very good, even now. Wild Arms, which came before the surge of popularity that Final Fantasy 7 brought, is an amazing adventure that is original compared to newer games.
Our hero, Rudy, is not exactly your typical hero. He may seem like it, but as the story progresses, he becomes different from any character you've played. Jack, however, is like many characters in games, a bandit looking for treasure, an easy cliche. Cecilia is the basic damsel in distress, whom ends up being some secret power in the world.
These are the basic similarities. The game's story excels, and starts off a little slow, but once you get your party together, the action takes off. The villans are easy to hate, and bring in the cool villan factor as well (in my opinion, Boomerang and Ziegfried are awesome). The story is unlike I've ever heard, and I won't spoil it for you.
The battle system is well maintained too. I like when you perform actions, and the camera angle changes around, giving it a Matrix like feel. The Force system is well done, and is a lot like limit breaks. After being beat on for a while, you get access to cool moves, or summons of gaurdians. They are extremelly helpful too, and don't take long too build up. The tools were a good addition, but sometimes painfully annoying, like getting at the right angle to hit something.
The graphics are decent for it's time, and may be the first 3d battle RPG. The sound effects are superb, and the graphics for attacks, items and magics are very nice (although I couldn't stand that stupid cat summon). The music is a wonderful thing too. You can recognize it as Wild Arms immediately, even if you were blind. I truly enjoyed this game, and I believe you will too.
