kauza's Full Review: Wu Tang Shaolin Style for PlayStation 1
"The secret Wu-Tang discipline is a source of almighty power. A power so coveted, it has long been protected by the ancient Chinese sensei Xin for the good of all mankind. But when an evil master kidnaps the sensei in an attempt to combine the secret discipline with his own sinister energy, the Wu-Tang Clan must step in!"
This game was actually said to be converted from the original "Thrill Kill" game. If you had not heard about the game, the idea was trashed because it was much to gory, sick, and even perverted. The multiplayer arena idea, and the gore were then mixed with the Wu-Tang clan and out came Shaolin Style!
Story:
The story of the game is fairly creative. It is mostly revealed in the quote above from the official web site. The part I really liked about the plot was how the evil sensei is trying to combine the Wu-Tang arts with the sinister arts of his own. That is the fairly original part. The whole kidnapping of the sensei was a bit un-original, sounds like something I saw in every movie I've ever seen! The reason for the kidnapping makes it worth while though.
Graphics:
The graphics in the game are pretty good. I was expecting even a little less from them. The fighters move pretty realisticly, some of the things they do are very far fetched though. That what fighting games are all about though, right? The place where the graphics really stand out are the fatality sequences. They are well done and often more pleasing to the eye than Mortal Kombat's. The only problem that I saw with the graphics was the way that the Wu guys looked. None of them looks anything like them in real life. Parents: If you are worried about your kids seeing all of the gore, the game comes with all the gore and fatalities turned off, and you need a password from the manual to turn it all back on.
Sound:
The sound is pretty decent. The voices of the characters actually does sound like them. The real deal with the sound is the music. The Wu-Tang music is pretty cool, but they should have put more songs into the game. I think that there are only three songs that are all exclusive to the game. Where are songs like "Protect Ya Neck?" They could have put some of their hits in as well as those three.
Control:
The control is pretty good. I find that the only problem is that the combo system is a little un-responsive at times. I'll be trying to pull off a combo and have to try about 5 times to get it right. That might just be me though.
Gameplay:
The game is really fun, but it is also really hard. The basis of the game is on combos, and if you don't know many you will get beat really bad. The thing is is that combos are so hard to pull off that you will probably get beat quickly. Spending a lot of time in the practice mode will do you a world of good. I do like the 36 chambers feature. You are to complete the 36 chambers, which includes things such as blocking over 4 moves in a row, doing a combo of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, and revisiting stages. It is a small thing, but very cool. Also, the fact that you don't actually have to do fatalities like you have to in MK really helps. You have about 3 fatalities that are done by just having your last hit be a certain button. The multiplayer feature it just plain awesome! It is such a blast to play with 3 or 4 people. If you own a multitap, you should own this game.
