GarnathDragon's Full Review: Xenogears for PlayStation 1
Xenogears...
I've sat through conversations in real life about this game.
I've parted IRC channels because the talk had turned to the game, and I knew nothing of it then.
I managed to get a legitimate copy of this game for $5 recently, so I could finally see what the whole hubbub was about.
I'm sad to say that yet another of Squaresoft's Playstation RPGs lacked the ability to hold my attention.
I found myself unable to get into the gameplay - seems that the game environment, although nicely rendered, and very smooth moving, wasn't very immersive. It seemed so fake and uninteresting right there.
The storyline, up to the point that I got too irritated with the game to continue, was very dry, very dull, and uninteresting.
I know I'm going to catch a lot of flames and criticism for the next part, but:
I didn't even finish the Black Moon Forest.
This is near the beginning of the first CD in this 2 CD game, for those of you who've never played it.
The bad part about it is...
I made it to CD 3 of Final Fantasy VIII before getting as irritated as I did with Xenogears...
...and I hate Final Fantasy VIII with a passion.
The best part about Xenogears, in my opinion, however, is the cutscenes.
I liked the anime style for each one I did manage to see.
The worst?
The battles.
They were tedious, slow, and annoying.
I've played plenty of RPGs, and i've got to say...
Xenogears has an interesting concept for battles, but it's terrible in action.
Honestly, I'm happier off with most of Square's Pre-Playstation RPGs.
