tprules14's Full Review: Xenogears for PlayStation 1
Xenogears is an amazing game made by Squaresoft, a company known for producing such high-quality titles as Final Fantasy, Chrono Cross, etc. Xenogears is no exception. With an excellent storyline and wonderful music by Mitsuda, a great composer, this game will captivate you in many ways.
You begin your quest as Fei, a powerful but emotional character, in his hometown. Everything seems fine until something terrible happens and Fei is forced to question his past and future. Struck with the difficult question of whether to fight or to flee, Fei encounters a variety of problems throughout his quest to discover himself and his friends. (And thus the wonder of Xenogears begins...)
The storyline throughout the game is full of variety and emotion. You will certainly be intrigued even early in the game, and you will be hooked until the end, always wondering what will happen next or what you will discover. Many Role Playing or Story Driven games tend to become cliche or corny after a while, but this is something Xenogears avoids well.
The graphics aren't exactly breathtaking, but they are above average, and you will probably enjoy the freedom incorporated with the 3d isometric environment. The only problem with the graphics is a small problem with camera angles (only sometimes, not very often). Luckily, a great feature is implemented. At almost any time in the game, with the touch of a button you can change the camera angle so that you can see "all sides" of an area and discover things you otherwise may have missed.
One of the best parts of the game, the Sound in Xenogears must be heard to be believed. Almost every song is very enjoyable, and you will probably be humming right along at times, as the music is simply captivating. Almost all of the songs fit the mood very well (whatever it may be) and are very pleasant to the ear.
Fortunately, Xenogears also comes equipped with a great battle system. There are really two main types of battles: battles on foot, and battles with gears. Throughout the game, you will control a number of gears, or large mechanical robots. These machines add another level to the battle system, and certainly make it more interesting. Furthermore, the use of such gears is tied into the storyline (as you will see), and plays a role in some of Fei's decisions throughout the game.
Xenogears is not another "average RPG." There are many good games, but this game is stunning, and I assure that you will not be disappointed upon purchasing the game.
